Some questions for a new PC.

Im looking to buy a new Gaming PC next month. Its going to be a full overhaul. The only thing I dont need is a PSU.

My budget looks to be around £1500. Im not explicitly looking to spend it all but neither is that an upper bound if it can be justified.

Ive a few key questions.

Is DDR4 RAM worth it? Its better clock speeds but a lot more expensive.

AMD or Intel. If Intel, are the new Skylakes worth the money as a first gen of their build?

GTX 980Ti. Im assuming this is pretty much a given.

Are SSD's worth going in for as a main disk type yet or one 500GB as a main and then HDD TB drives?

Also, any case recommendations? Its hard to window shop on the net for cases. :p

Any and all answers greatly appreciated.

Drr 4 not reallyworth it but if you go Skylake is a must.

Intel no doubt about it.

980ti would be my choice.

Yes a ssd for main disk at least 256gb.

Cases are personal choice imo.

As a boot drive you don't need more than 250GB. And that's for multi-booting. Just windows alone and you can get by on 120GB. But isn't worth it for other reasons price / performance is best with minimum 250GB.

However since it's for gaming then your main drive space hog will be the games themselves. Which are going to benefit vastly from SSD. So your SSD size depends entirely on how many games you play / want installed concurrently.

500 GB should be enough to get by for that.

So after some consideration, its a bit more than I expected to spend but Ive come up with this:

8Pack Approved - Elite Tier SkyLake Bundle: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.50GHz, Asus Z170 Maximum VIII Hero, 16GB DDR4 3000MHz, 256GB NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD, OcUK Techlabs Extreme 240mm Hydro CPU Cooler - £799.99

Inno3D GeForce GTX 980Ti Hybrid Black Edition 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (C98TP-1SDN-N5HNX) - £569.99

Samsung 1.0TB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E1T0B/EU) - £259.99 inc VAT

Phanteks Enthoo Primo Full Tower Case - £199.99

OcUK Tech Labs Airflow Control Cooling Kit - BitFenix Recon Black + 4x Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 - £57.95

TOTAL = £1,887.91

I currently have Corsair Professional Series HX1050 1050W Power Supply which I intend to use.

Plus two HDD (total 2.5TB) which Ill use as things like picture and music dumps.

Regarding the bundle, I would like to OC but Im new to it, so a DIY step by step OC seems like a good intro. Plus, since Im burning so much money anyway, I figure I might as well burn the extra £200 and go Skylake.

The GPU looking at the stats represents the best value for money. There are cares with better speeds but they are all £~100 more while comparably priced cards are slower. The liquid cooled should also keep the noise down. Something Ive come to appropriate with my current PC.

The 1TB SSD, I due use a lot of games and critically, the comparable 500GB cars are still ~£170. Meaning if I want a second SSD, I pay a premium because I didnt get the bigger size now. Again, in for a penny.

The Fans are two fold. 1: Spare fans are never a bad thing 2: The bundle recommends a fan controller. I should have some fun figuring out how it wires in.

Thoughts?

Comments?

It all looks pretty good. Too bad they don't do a cheaper bundle with the i5-6600K. Meh. Either one of those is OK.

BTW:

Grizzly is the best *thermal* paste ATM (which is included with the bundle). Yet if you will want to overclock better at some point in future, then that really needs the Coollaboratories Liquid Ultra. For £9 from OCUK. You can use the gizzly paste to begin with. Then keep the liquid metal in reserve for future (perhaps after also lapping the IHS).

Please god dont get liquid pro.

Yes it will give you a few degrees better temperature. But is horrific to use and frankly can kill a system too easily and will degrade the surface of your cpu ihs and cooler itself due to the galium contents.

10/10 Avoid like the plague.

You are correct about Pro. But I didn't actually recommend that product and nor would. Ultra is significantly better in terms of application and doable for most people providing they read the instructions and watch a video first.

Bear in mind that the gallium reacts only with aluminium and it is true that care must be taken in that respect. However for those selected parts ^^ both the IHS and HS are copper. So there's no concern in that respect.

The only correct time to use use CLU (if ever) is after the last application of thermal paste. I.e. once you are certain that you are settled with the system and are not have any further reason to remove & re-assemble. Then it's time to apply CLU and leave it be for a long time. First watch a decent video, be careful where you put the stuff, and don't over-apply. That is the recipe for success.

In the end it's really down to the specific user and their judgement. It is very true that a certain level of competence and research / understanding into the product is required for a successful application of CLU. You can't just storm in and go around slapping it on there willy-nilly. If you don't have that confidence in that whole process (including clearup after next removal) then of course don't do it. It's certainly not recommended. But you know... this is OCUK. Not some vanilla reseller. And that guy's selected bundle is specifically one meant for overclocking.

Don't be so sure about that. If the PSU is more than a few years old, the CPU power connector has changed from 4 pin to 8 pin, and the PSU needs to be Haswell compatible. Which PSU do you currently have?

^
So much this + gives you the option of grabbing a 8 core if you need, whereas you wont even have a 6 core option with skylake if you wanted to upgrade.

If your new to overclocking and are interested then the best thing is just to read some of the step by step guides in the other forum sections and follow them. The fan controller is easy stuff unless the fan controller design is ridiculous, you shouldn't be able to get that wrong, just plug things in where they fit :)

which ever takes your fancy, just a note encase he didn't know it had a basic one with it.. I suppose its more of a fan hub though.

Regarding liquid ultra paste. Whilst the temp drops compared to standard pastes are good. It us tricky stuff to apply. And a nightmare to remove from the gpu's ihs. An isopropyl jet wash being the only sure fire way without having to resort to sanding the chip down.

Also for a 980ti, I can highly recommended the msi gaming edition.

Very cool running and an extremely quiet card. You could make a further saving by going for the slightly smaller phanteks enthoo luxe case.

Most of the features of the primo in a smaller and lighter package.

Agreed with the MSI 980ti, it's superb and extremely quiet on 100 percent speed.

Oh wow thanks for the responses.

Ill measure it up on my current one. I defiantly want bigger than Ive got but that looks like it might fit the bill. Cheers.

ust a note, The Phanteks case comes with a built in fan controller , do you need the extra one

No I did not but if I go for the smaller one I will still need it.

If i had that cash i would get a Titan, then work everything around it

For the price of a Titan I get nearly two 980's which are better performance.

Forget Skylake, go with X99 and get a 5820k, going with Skylake is silly when you get more cores with the 5820k for about the same price.

It was my understanding that for gaming inparticular core were very poorly utilized. One of the reasons AMD suffers in gaming as their core are heavily build for multi-threading which games just dont deliver on.

Don't be so sure about that. If the PSU is more than a few years old, the CPU power connector has changed from 4 pin to 8 pin, and the PSU needs to be Haswell compatible. Which PSU do you currently have?

Corsair Professional Series HX1050 1050W Power Supply. Its pins or detachable, so they are both 4 and 8 pin. I had hell with it when I got it wondering why nothing would connect to my (at the time) 260 TI.

I bought it in Dec 2012. So its getting on but it is Corsair. It came with a 5yr warranty or something. Id previously blown up (blue electrical pop, smoke, burning electronics the works) so I figure it was worth getting something that would last. Cheap ass PSU's were guna end up costing me more anyway at the rate I was losing them.

Coollaboratories Liquid Ultra

Baby steps. Lets get my first OC PC up and running before I start looking for specialist stuff.

So assuming I choose to go not Skylake, keep the core of the bundle bought as separate purchases but go what:

Asus X99-S - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***30 Saving***

Having to get all the other core of the old bundle I cant really stretch to:

Asus X99-S - Intel Core i7 5930K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***30 Saving***
Asus Rampage V Extreme - Intel Core i7 5930K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***20 Saving***

Get a 980Ti, 12GB vram is not needed. 980Ti and Titan X performance is so similar its not worth the price hike for 12GB vram.

X99 is still fantastic for Gaming and with the addition of the extra cores for future DX12 and any rendering or editing tasks. AMD suffers in gaming because their CPU's are outdated and to be honest, crap compared to intel.

A 5820k clocked up to 4.5ghz is very easy. Skylake on the other hand isnt, probably would need to be de-lidded for comfortable temperatures. Clock for Clock X99 vs skylake there is very little inbetween, couple fps maybe. And that would be both ways depending on the game.

CPU thermal paste get EK ectotherm or Arctic silver 5. Dear god dont get liquid pro. Dont get any of that diamond junk aswell, like clay and like rubbing your IHS and GPU die with sandpaper.

The luxe case has the fan hub too. Also, the HX 1050 psu should be fine too. I used an HX850 with both haswell 4770k and 4790k without issues.
