ATI R600 News
R600 cards are showing up in working order. ZDNet showed a picture of a lone OEM ATI R600 yesterday. Today for you we have pictures of two ATI R600 cards working in unison, but rather than graphics, they are pounding away showing off their prowess in a Teraflop Stream demo.

Certainly it is good to see ATI's next-gen graphics cards showing up even if it is not pushing pixels. We have been able to confirm some other R600 news that is not good. ATI is stating that a SINGLE R600 high end configuration will require 300 watts of power (+/-9%) and a DUAL R600 "CrossFire" high end configuration will require, as you might guess, 600 watts of power (+/-9%). Compare that to a single GeForce 8800 GTX that will pull 150 to 180 watts. Add in a CPU to that mix and you overtake most power supplies’ peak ratings on the retail shelves today.

Also many have been worried about the size of the new R600 video cards. ATI is stating that 345mm / 13.6" will be the required space to fit the cards in a case. (Yes, the retail version will be somewhat shorter, or at least that is what is told to us even though we have yet to see one.) This figure is the card's 335mm physical length plus 10mm to properly install the card. A GeForce 8800 GTX is just under 11 inches longs while the 4 GPU 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 comes in at 11.75 inches. Certainly if you have an R600, it looks like you will be able to claim having the longest in the room….

Makes you wonder what the ATI engineers were thinking when they designed this card. Seems very OTT for something that may just be on par with the G80. Crunching is one thing but lets see some real world gaming performance

the power requirement there was nto very specific.

would that be what PSU ATI recamends or is that the total Watt power draw from the ATI. ??

It would have to be the draw from the card alone. ATI doesn't know what other components you have in your system, so they can't say "you need a 300W PSU". It must be 300W just for the card.

just added another nail in the coffin to sway me to order a 8800gts right about now.

EDIT - Ordered :)

why not, thats what ati and nvidia have do for every release before today. i refuse to accept that a direct competitor to the 8800gtx requires twice the power to do its stuff untill i see proof.

Still nothing definite, but it's not looking good is it?!

Anyone know what PSU is being used in the rig in the photo?

So as it stands at the moment then for G80 vs R600,

1) The R600 uses nearly twice the amount of power,
2) The resulting cooling solution on the OEM cards means the card is 13.6" (I find it very confusing why the retail version is shorter)

And this is before we compare the performance. Assuming that the retail version is indeed shorter, saving many of us from having to buy a new case, I suspect most will have to fork out on a new PSU. This card is going to need to have some impressive performance results over the G80 in order to justify this.

I'm curious as to how close these reports will be to the released product (if they ever release the damn things).

It might be the OCZ or Corsair 1 or 2KW ones, as it has 2 KETTLE PLUGS coming from it!

These are sad days. This is supposed to be a performance forum! We are supposed to be nerdy & anal about fps & IQ, not worry about power requirements or if the card will fit.

It shouldn't matter if the damn thing hums & glows when you switch it on, all that matters is it goes faster than anything else!

Now get with the programme!

Quite right! When I turn on my PC I want the neighbourhood lights to dim. :D

Yeah I'm looking forward to R800. Turn on your PC and the steetlights go dim...

[edit: Nooooooooo! Beaten to it. Well, great minds...]

well while i agree this is the enthusiats paradise as i am sure it will kick serious bootay, wondering if the card will even fit and weather the leccy meter will burn up just to run it do post interesting dilemmas lol. if speculation is correct then in 12 months nvidia will have much much lower power requirment for their gpus which unless ATI keep up is going to hurt them regardless of the stonkiness of the card they produce. the market for enthusiasts is tiny anyway, when you then factor in the enthusiasts that can warrant a 300 or 600w drain just for the graphics card and have a case to actualy fit the damn things in they are restricting themselves i feel.

Bloody hell, single R600 pulls 300w  , yet the single 8800 GTX only pulls about 150-180, pmsl, better get yourselves a new PSU as well when you purchase your R600, Galaxy 1000w at least. :D :D

What a joke, its history, we've all moved on now, just forget the R600. :)

The only ppl who are gona be able to do Crossfire are those who can afford their own power plants for their back gardens, 300w for a single, thats ******* insane!!!!, an absolute cracking **** take. :D

Is it April 1st or what PMSL 300w for a single!!!! ROLFTASTIC im bloody crying here, class.

If it's as bad as it sounds then you want to start thinking about having to start wiring in a separate mains ring to be able to handle the power!

personally i would still take this info with a pinch of sault.

i own a 8800GTX and think its bloody awsome but i would hate to see nvidia become more lax knowing that their competition has been blown out of the water...

competition is good for the market and all of us

I can't get over it me, thats seriously beyond a joke that, absolutely taking the **** pure and simple with that thing, its gota be wrong surely, 300w is just gahh what can you say, mental, its mental, your gona be able to a ******* fry up on your case, just whack some bacon and eggs on there, jesus its mad, totally lost the plot they have. :D
