I love:

Slayer

And have never found a metal band I like as much - though I do love The Haunted, but only some of their songs.

Can anyone recommend?

Look for early thrash stuff. Early Metallica, Megadeth, MEshuggah.
Emperor - Prometheus (altough not like Slayer, of you like metal then you must have this). I'm only saying that because im listening to it at the minute!
Lamb of God, Machine Head, Chimera.
Just get looking around for thrash stuff really.

I am quite a fan of Metallica. Have all their albums - but as much as I love it, its always seemed more like rock to me, even the early stuff that is very thrashy. Its simply not as intense as Slayer. Ditto Megadeath, although less like rock to me. Meshuggah I find too technical a lot of the time. What I like about slayer, and the likes of sabbath, is the brutal simplicity of their riffs.

Lamb of God I do quite like actually, tracks like ruin kick serious ass. Ditto Machine Head. Never understood why people criticise them. Emperor? Don't know them, I will look into it.

On the darker end of the spectrum you could look at Zyklon, specially the Aeon album. Also Check out Impaled - Mondo Medicale, thats very angry and thrashy.
If you're willing to try some really fast stuff, but nice and basic, have a look at Nasum - Inhale Exhale, and Human 2.0
Also Pig Destroyer - Terrifier.
On the slower end, but still keeping things basic, you could have a look at Iron Monkey, and with a little more technicallity Cult of Luna.

Know what you mean with Metallica compared to Slayer. They sound really different. I find Pantera closer to Slayer myself, although again distinctly different. Not in that thrash style I mean, but for general heaviness and really exciting guitar work of the type I think you're making reference to. Although you must have listenned to some already so can't be what you're after.

Deicide's first two albums: Deicide and Legion.

Ticks every adjective box you've mentioned, but also has less of a girly vocal than Tom ;)

EDIT: unless by "Slayer", you mean their later work, not the Reign In Blood era stuff, in which case Deicide might be a little too intense.

Sepultura, Try Beneath the Remains and the Arise album:

Entombed, particularly Morning Star:

Deicide are also a pretty good bet but Slayer are at their finest for me when they play the slower crushing kind of riffs, Deicide are more like the faster end of the Slayer type style.

Anything more recent than about 1992 and I'm lost though, IMO the year metal seriously stagnated. :)

Thanks guys,

Dmpoole - Evile sound very much like kill em all to me - New wave. As such, although in principle I like it, it does sound rather outdated. The goes for Exodus, to me, although obviously there is a reason they sund outdated. :)

Pantera - quite a big Pantera fan, brilliant riffs of course, but it doesnt havet he drumming of slayer, nor the overall heavyness and darkness.

After listeing to some Deicide, I can see where you are coming from. They have the hell like intensity slayer have. But what the lack, to me, is the anger of the vocals from slayer - because its too death metal. Slayer always seem satanic in a fun, thrashy way, ure anger, where deicidde seem genuinely satanic, and you can't sing along like you can with Slayer. Do you know what I mean?

I suppose that is what make slayer so original; a mixture of thrash and death, with unusual vocals. and of course steller drumming.

I quite like Arch Enemy, too, and Carcass - they are similar to slayer in terms of riffs, i think, but the same old death metal vocals im not overkeen on.

But Emtombed - now we seem to be on to something here. They do sound a little less spontatnoeus than slayer, slightly more produced. But I like the vocals.

I also like Sepultura a lot - but I think they're too sludgy.

If you like that Entombed then grab the album Morning Star.

Even if just for the Lyrics:

"Prepare to suck **** in Hell, it's really not all that bad once you get over the smell"

Classic stuff.

A personal favourite of mine:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gCc89smKM3Q&feature=related (although not the biggest Slayer alike track they've done)

Have a quick Youtube for the track About to Die (swearing included so I won't link)

Municipal Waste.

Much more of a hardcore sound, nothing really like Slayer:confused:

A bit more technical and progressive, but i'd forgotten about Textures - Polars. Very very good modern metal with some seriously thrashy elements. Don't expect Slayer though, but you can never say you did'nt try!

You know what guys? As controversial as it might be to suggest, I think Lamb of God are probably the only band that give me that warm fuzzy feeling like Slayer do.

I think is the angry riffs, coupled with the immense sense of timing and rhythm. And excellent drumming.
