SOME RYZEN 7 1700 OVERCLOCKING!

I rarely upgrade the CPU and board once I get the one I wanted unless something amazing comes out, The last time I upgraded the CPU and motherboard was jan 2013, ive added bits over time like larger SSD later and I normally upgrade the GPU every 2 years skipping one model.

I do a bit of everything on the PC, Movies steaming, music, office, multi tasking, Gaming Im not heavy gamer That I need to get the highest FPS and only play a few games (skyrim, DA3, batman, mafia, ext), every so often I do video and photo editing, sometimes music and video converting.
Definitely the 1700 then

3800mhz @ 1.25 volts stock cooler - stable. Here's the CPU-z single thread benchmark, think it saves it is here (hopefully) http://valid.x86.fr/bench/41w797/1 . Front page http://valid.x86.fr/41w797

Single thread i7 7700k gets 2301, my Ryzen 1770 gets 2213, the i7 6700k gets 2144.

I could probably go to 3.9 or higher but it begins to cook. However, if you saw how much acoustic foam was in my case you wouldn't be surprised. I'm still waiting for my AM4 bracket from Noctua to arrive.

3.8 is pretty good on a stock cooler

Just watched pauls hardware video on his ocing, I cannot work out why anyone would buy a 1800x or 1700x when the 1700 seems to oc and perform nearly as well? Do you need a beefy mobo to oc a 1700 compared with the x's? Also what does the x stand for, it doesn't seem to be like an intel K that denotes unlock multiplier, what's the difference between a 1700 and 1700x?

The X series get more headroom with XFR and that's about it. Other than that they appear to be identical, although Gibbo has said that the 1700s do seem to be cooler even with an overclock

Pauls hardware had the same thing, a vast difference in temp between the 1700 vs the 1700x and 1800x, he couldn'd confirm the temps tho, it's very interesting tho.

Voltages needed for 4.0-4.1 vs 3.9 spike the temps up 10c. ~1.4ish+

Everyone trying to overclock their 1700 I have seen online saying 3.9 is ok but voltages needed + the heat over 3.9 is just too much.

That's my guess anyway with the higher 1800x temps as it insures higher frequency.

The 1700 variant is binned to fit the 65w TDP at lower clocks, its entirely possible that these are the lower leakage variants as that was the only way to meet the 65w tdp and with limited head room in max clocks (without LN2) it seems theres very little differentiate the 3 models, they all have limited max speeds but the 1700 is consuming less power at the stock clocks so had 'room' to scale a bit. If these were high overclockers then it would make more sense to get the x variants as they would be binned higher and have more room to overclock but it looks like AMD is right on the limit of the stepping they're shipping with so it seems that they have focused on binning for the 1700 first rather than the top end.

The only other thing is that power usage should be less on the 1700x/1800x if you arent overclocking due to sensemi being active, as soon as you change the multiplier this gets disabled and you lose that tight voltage curve thats been applied so you unfortunately lose a significant efficiency saving. Its a shame how AMD has implemented the OC flag as it means a lot of people will miss out on the savings.

Personally I had the 1700x ordered but then picked up a 1700 as it seems like the better chip for me as I will be continuing with my watercooled setup and a few more watts isnt the end of the world.

Be interesting to see what else happens this week, still waiting for a motherboard myself! Amazon preorder proved to be a waste of time ha.

It will be good for people to mention the board they are using too. The Asrock B350 board at £100 looks nice.
I think this "beefy VRM" thing that leaked is a bit more blown-up than what is actually true

Christ what temps are you getting at that oc? I'm at 3.5 using an artic cooler and hitting 70c under full load

do you have a 240mm AIO?

if so can you test to see temps (idle / stress aida 64 free trail)

and if the cooling gives you more head room, do you think you can get to 3.9Gz (or even 4)?
Unfortunately I don't have a 240mm AIO, only really ever used high end air cooling. Will definitely be going for 3.9 once I have a bit of time. Just been playing a bit of FH3, max temp was 52c.
