I bought an Impreza Sport a few weeks back and it seems to have developed a few faults and I wonder if any of you can offer some sound advice.

First question the car came without a keyfob. It was crushed in an accident. I have been told a new fob will be £70 then a further £30 to program it. Will I be able to program this myself or does the dealer have to do something to get it to work. I know some cars you can do a routine to pair the fob with the car, is this possible here?

Secondly the ignition barrel has got a major problem. I have googled this and noticed it seems to be a common fault. The key comes out of the lock even when the motor is running. When the engine is off the steering lock does not come on at all. I have been quoted £400 by the main dealer to fit a new ignition barrel and keys.

Do you guys know any cheaper alternative ways of me fixing this???

Nah I did think that but the fob was genuine and the key thing is apparantly a common problem.

why buy it though. You knew about the fob problem when viewing it ? did nothing say "run away" when you noticed the damanage ignition barrell and no fob ?

You'd think people would show some common sense when parting with their cash but even though it looked dodgy you went and bought it anyway.

I honestly cannot fathom people who make buying decisions like this.

You're a dodgy used car salesman's wet dream.

Like the girl with the lupo last week. Used car salesman "its a bit ropey, needs a service and new tyres" her "will you pay for it" him "No" her "ok i'll put a deposit down then please"

just walk away, there are other cars out there !!

*has a breakdown*

First of all I wasnt ripped off the problem was known hence why I got it at a cheaper price. Secondly I knew the person who sold it to me so its not as if I bought it off some shady guy on a street corner.

All I am after here is some advice if I just buy a fob can I reprogramme it easily?

Can I get a new ignition barrel and key cheaper than what the main deler can do it for?

Not rocket science you do not have to stress over my questions!

very unlikely

i had this with my last car, it was a citroen and the fob was made of soft plastic. After 8years the buttons just broke and didnt work.

Tryed to find somebody who could programme the fob for me but couldnt. Delears like to keep this sort of thing exclusive because A) as its a nice little earner and B) to help make the cars more secure

Can only suggest you try the people in your local yellow pages and see if anybody has the software that would be required to programme it.

Dont want to make a new thread but could someone please direct me to any good sites what sell scooby turbo bonnets and sti 5/6 spoilers

been checking all over google and ebay and such

cheers

A non-working fob is hardly the end of the world. It's usually the last owner is too lazy/stupid to get a new battery and stick it in the barrel to recode it as per the manual.

I bought my Seat with the remote not working and that's all it took. In fact i fixed my boss' mercedes one the same way after he told me mercedes wanted £160 to give him a whole new key.

To answer teh recode question - OPEN THE MANUAL! It usually has a bit in there to tell you how to recode if your key has lost signal.

Usually something along the lines of stick it in the barrel, turn to ign 1, press lock andu nlock at the same time, key flashes - recoded. Of course if your battery is low or dead you will need a new one.

ahh yes - well i believe the new one will need to be recoded at subaru and at whatever price they wish to charge...from then on you can re-assign to what I've said!

When you say fob you mean a fob on the keyring, not the key?

AFAIK, the sport didn't come with an alarm as standard, so you need to find out what alarm is on it.
