Some sites working - others not

I've been with my ISP for years now and I've been having a problem since 7pm last night. When all of a sudden some sites don't work in the browser - it says that the link is broken and with a bit of ctrl+f5 the page eventually loads after a couple of minutes.

Just wondering what could have caused this. Its the same for all 3 computers on the network. I've not changed any router settings.

Any ideas?

If you havn't changed anything then I'd put it down to your ISP just making some changes. Might be a DNS issue.. but either way.. not much you can do other than try OpenDNS if you want to.

Have you tried restarting your router?

Sorry for not being more specific. It isn't working on all browsers (ie, ff, chrome).

For instance in chrome - if I enter www.google.com in the address bar I get this:

"DNS error - cannot find server"
"Oops! This link appears to be broken."

If I reload the page it has a 50/50 chance of loading Google.

I restarted my router a couple of times yesterday.

Thanks

Sounds like a DNS issue.

Your machine is struggling to resolve the IP address of the websites you've entered.

You could try opendns as suggested by grod. Get the server details off the web (if your machine will connect!!) and add them to your router as the DNS servers.

Or, call your ISP and ask whats going on.

:)

I don't think it could be spyware - because all the computers in the house have the same issue.

I've done the openDNS thing and its working fine now. It is strange why its suddenly occured though.

Is there a point taking off the DNS settings from openDNS later to see if it works without the DNS or is there no point?

I like using my ISP's DNS servers more than OpenDNS, but unless you have any more problems I dont see why you would change again.. its a free service..
