Hello i got a new cpu cooler today i followed the instructions word for word took my time and installed it fine.

I turned my pc on i could smell burning i looked through the side window and looked to be smoke coming from the mobo near to the ram i tried to turn the power off but it wouldnt so i turned it off from the psu.

My instant thought was my cpu has been fryed cause i not installed the cooler right so i took the cpu out and it looks fine it doesnt smell burnt or anything no sign of anything been burnt either.

The burnt smell seems to becoming from my mobo.

Has any one got any idea what the hell has happend, never had anything happen be4 like this its left me kinda shaken in a wierd way.

I have not tried to turn my pc on since then.

My mobo is a asus p8p67 pro and my cpu i5-2500k

Kinda hope so if it was the cpu i would assume there be some sort of sign of damage.

I have have a psu burn out on me be4 and the smell came form the psu when tha happend theres no sign of that this time though

I am gonna be brave and turn it back on gonna put my old cpu cooler back on see what happens or is that a bad idea.

Pretty sure its not the cpu as well even if the cooler wasnt installed as u say it would just slowly overheat and turn off.

Cooler is a Thermalright Archon.

I been advised to unplug everything barring cpu and cooler and boot it, watch for smoke, if i get no beeps the mobo is dead. Gonna give it ago.

kk i have pluged i in at the wall and theres a green light on my mobo, whats the paper clip trick

Nope the burnt smell i is coming from the top of my mobo cant smell anything from my psu

I'm gonna take the mobo out and try locate where he smell is coming from cause on the front of the board tehre no sign of anything been burnt

I have found the problem on the back of the mobo near where the ram is there is a burnt aera i have no idea whats caused this

I am guessing that will make the mobo kaput will i have any issues rmaing this.

Capicators and my ram slots little square chip things bigger square things which i assume are capicators too. Lots of important things it looks like. Just hope its not damaged any other of my parts.

Thanks for the help guys, no power odditys that i know of. I had the ram running at 1.5volts. When i unplug the power calbe my mbo resets to default values and i have to reinput settings in bios i wonder if that has anything to do with it. i will contact ocuk now see what they say.

Thats the exact location thanks for that surveyor.

Messaged ocuk i am at there mercy.

I thought i might have got some thermal compound some where but i couldnt see any anywhere.

Heres what i did step by step.

I took my old intel stock cooler off was easy enough

I took the back off my case and fitted the back plate to the mobo.

I then cleaned the cpu area with the artic clean stuff. Made sure it was dry and nice and clean

I fitted the mouting bracket to the back plate.

I put the thermal paste on my cpu i used the x method.

I then fitted the heat sync to the bracket and tightend with the mini spanner thing that came with the cooler

I checked the cooler was mounted then pluged the fan into the cpu fan header.

Pluged pc back in reconnected keyboard mouse and so on, powerd up. Sniff sniff wtf is that smell checked the side of my comp i saw smoke coming from the top of my mobo near the ram area. tried to power off using the power button nothing happend so i turned it of by the psu and came on here for help after i had clamed down :P

Yeah the worse of the damage is under one of the mosfets, its taken the finsh off the mobo. Is the on closes to the ram and motherboard power socket.

What are the chances its damaged the rest of my parts kinda worried about that.

Well a month or 2 before this happend i was close to rmaing the board in the first place, I had 2 issues with it one being the ethernet port and the other was it stoped booting from cold and wouldnt remeber my bios settings. I had to put the ram in the other sockets and update my bios it was fine after that though.

I should have returned it then when i had the chance .
