You might think this is a thread asking for advice on how to play the game. Sadly, I suck at this game so much I haven't even gotten so far as to actually play it yet. Instead, I'm asking for advice on configuring my gamepad /hides face in shame

My problem is that, although my gamepad has 10 buttons (4 face buttons and 6 shoulder buttons, which I'm pretty sure is more than a 360 pad), this game seems to have way too many controls to accomodate them all! :(

The controls listed in the options menu are (deep breath): light punch, medium punch, heavy punch/page right, LP+MP+HP/page left, light kick/confirm, medium kick/back, heavy kick/right shift, LK+MK+HK/left shift, throw, focus attack, personal action. And those are IN ADDITION to start and select, which I found out I *need* to assign cause if I try to do it with the keyboard the game reads it as Player 2 trying to get in the game and interrupts me! The bottom line is OMFG SSFIVAE! WHY SO MANY BUTTONS???

So the question is, which of those controls should I just leave unassigned? My first thought was the LP+MP+HP and LK+MK+HK ones, but the problem is those also do "page left" and "left shift" (whatever those are, I assume "left shift" is some kind of sidestep thing?"), so I'm a bit stuck! Advice?

u need

lp, mp, hp
lk, mk, hk

block

that is all ?

press lp+mp+hp ( or what ever combo) together you don't really need seperate button do you.

I use a 360 pad on ssf4ae and my button combination is:

x=lp
y=lp+mp+hp
a=lk
b=lk+mk+hk
rb=focus attack
rt=throw
lt=taunt
select=select
start=start

Works fine for me but to do akumas and a few others ultras i have to swap b to hk and y to hp

Hope this helps :)

Taunt???? I don't even see a mappable taunt action there! Or a block action like LabR@at has! Are we talking about the same game here? Is taunt the same as personal action or something?

Yeah sorry mate taunt is personal action.
As for block, you never have to map block as all you do is hold away from your opponent to block.

Ah-ha! Yes, that makes sense, I do remember that you always blocked with a direction key, thought it was a bit weird that you'd need a separate button for it! :)

Still, it IS a stupid amount of buttons! Tekken makes do with 4! I'll just leave the 2 combo buttons behind for now, think that makes the most sense.

When having lp+mp+hp or lk+mk+hk assigned to one button it makes most of the ultra moves very easy to pull off mate instead of having to do the motions then press 3 seperate buttons at the same time you just have to do the motion then press 1 button which is mapped as 3 punches or kicks.

As i said before its the method i use apart from when playing as certain characters such as akuma as certain ultra moves with them are done like lp lp towards lk hp very quickly and i dont think using the 3 combo on 1 butoon works as the hard punch on moves like that.
That said having all 3 punches and all 3 kicks on 1 button makes it so much easyier for 90% of the other characters ultras.
It also makes doing the ex powered special moves easy too.

Hope that helped

all you need is:

lp,mp,hp
lk,mk,hk

Ideally laid out in that pattern on a pad or stick with 6 face buttons.

You throw by pressing lp + lk, you perform a focus attack by pressing mp + mk and taunt by pressing hp + hk. You press all 3 punches or kicks after inputting the correct motion with the d-pad to perform an Ultra.

Only reason to use buttons that do lp+mp+hp is if you have a pad or stick with less than 6 face buttons as pressing 2 face and a shoulder button at the same time can be a bit difficult :p
