Some turbo advice please.

I had very little mechanical knowledge when I change the turbo on my mk3 for the first time. This is what I was dealing with!

I'm sure you'll have no problems :)

All turbos leak a little, If there is no blue smoke on idle or under acceleration then its not that bad. Leaving the car idling and then blipping the throttle is not the best thing to do as you saturate the turbo with oil.

You could remove the pipe that runs from the intercooler to the inlet and have a look in here for excessive oil in the pipe and inlet, its normal to have a small amount.

Autovaux sell the complete kit with turbo and fitting kit for around the same price.

I would personally get your turbo rebuilt by companies like CRC Turbos/Turbo Dynamics etc you are looking at a £150-200 repair assuming no other issues.

I also would get a garage to remove/fit the turbo if you had trouble with a oil change the last thing you want to do is drop a nut/bolt into the engine when removing the turbo/manifold or not feed oil through the turbo properly before starting the car.

It was fun but the chassis could not cope with the power.. the car fell apart around the engine. In the End i put the engine back in the cavalier and sold it and scrapped the GTE was a shame as it was a limited Champion one...

I have a few friends with similar setups. With a few modifications around the engine bay the mk2 can handle decent power. A mate of mine has a Mk2 track car with the best part of 400BHP that's been fine for 5+ Years.

And YOU SCRAPPED A CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok it's been confirmed that the oil seals on my Turbo are pretty much shagged. The car is of course out of the main dealer warranty but I still have a 3 year warranty with the tuners which cover parts effected buy the state of tune. I emailed them today to see what there stance was and they said they doubt they would cover it as its wear and tear and the fact it made it to 40,000 miles is good going. This seems premature to me.

Ask over here to be sure its not the stem seals:

Theres a vid on youtube on how to fit the turbo here:

If your still stuck im willing to give you a hand on a weekend.

But i read somewhere the turbo warranty only stands if fitted by a garage.

I fitted an oil restrictor bolt today to lower the oil pressure in the turbo and it's still doing this. I have now noticed that I'm get a ticking coming from the manifold area. I'm guessing the stud bolts are lose or the gasket has blown. Could this cause smoking? If it's not that then its more than likley going to be valve stem seals which I've been quoted £800 to repair. Not good when the cars for sale.

EDIT: The issue is blue smoke on start up and when you blip the trottle after idling.

*sigh*

So glad to see Vauxhall reliability is the same throughout the range. It was crap like this that led me to sell my VXR as i was fed up of stuff breaking early and dealers telling me it was normal.

Not much help, but try an independent garage ? labour rates will be half that of the VXL dealer.

The Lolvo is on 120k and still on the original turbo. For the seals to go at 40k is a joke. remap or not !

To me it souns like the valve stem seals, but there is no way to be 100% sure unfortunately.

I also wouldn't run an 'oil restricter bolt', the turbo is supplied with that oil pressure it is for a reason. Especially as yours is remapped that is all the more critical.

One way to check the oil stem seals, and this is by no means conclusive, is to take the spark plugs out and check them. If one of the spark plugs is really soiled with oil and the others are fine then it's likely to be oil seals on that cylinder. It could be that they are all worn the same and you can see no difference. It could also be other things like oil control rings but that's very doubtfull on a 40k mile engine.
