Some Upgrades I'm Considering

Have an fx-6300, 8gb 1600mhz ram and a 280x at the minute. I'm considering going for a 1060 (probably one of the single fan ones as they're the cheapest) and a new power supply as mine's a bit crappy. If I buy a cpu cooler and overclock the 6300 to 4.5ghz do you reckon that will be OK paired with a 1060? And do you reckon the ram will hold me back at all? The fact that it's only 1600mhz/ddr3?

The PSU and GPU upgrades alone will cost 300 quid and a new mobo, cpu and ram will cost another 300+ so I'm trying to make the most of my money really.

So the question is, would it be worth dropping another 300 to 400 quid for the new mobo / cpu / ram - would I see a sizeable performance gain in games? One that's worth that kind of money?

I suppose I could always buy the GPU and see if I'm happy with that first, just wanted peoples thoughts. Cheers.

I'd probably consider getting a used GPU and PSU from the MM. The only thing worth dropping money on would be a Skylake i5 and motherboard cost around £300 then get a new PSU which would take it to around about £400. If you don't want to spend yet you can save and just buy a new PSU and cooler for CPU and go nuts overclocking it if the motherboards VRM's don't start throttling.

Going i5 would make some fps improvements but with a R9 280x holding it back you'd see it much more with a better GPU.

I have seen quite a bit of performance analysis with the 8350 and gtx 1060. There is a slight performance bottleneck at 1080p, but nearly none at 1440p.

What resolution and refresh rate are you planning to play at?

The ddr3 shouldn't hold you back, the latency rating on ddr3 is much lower so the performance isn't worlds of difference.

You will get the most bang for your buck upgrading just your cpu and gpu, but obviously if you have the budget then for a brand new skylake setup, not sure if the i3 will give considerable performance gains though, the 6300 is still no slouch
