Some 'Urban' pictures from me, c&c please :)

Hi guys,

As I was dropping my girlfriend off at the station this evening, I thought I may as well bring a camera along, and have a wander around Nottingham train station in the dark with said camera....

I think the cold got to the bit of my brain with the common sense bit in it.

Anyway, I managed to get a few photos, which I quite like, but thought I would ask you guys your opinion of them, and most importantly, how would you improve them?

Firstly, a picture taken at the train station. My girlfriend wasn't as impressed as I was that this was handheld at 1/4sec...

This one is just outside the train station, and is a bridgey thing that the tram line goes over:

This was a little alleyway with some happy light shining at the end, so I just had to meter for the light at the end and see what happened:

And this is a subway, on the walk from the bus stop back to my house. Errie huh?

The actual lighting at the time was pretty much on the orange side, so I tried to keep it as the situation actually was. I brightened up the clock face, but left the rest. When I get some time later, I think I'll have a play with the colours, and see if I can come up with something better.

I totally agree with you on the angle in the second, and I wish I had wandered around and taken some more. Bit difficult without a tripod, I was leaning on the wall to get that. Methinks a revisit is in order, armed with a tripod!

Need to go back with a tripod for the 3rd one as well actually...

Odd that you mention it, on the last one, some people started walking down from the other end, but I wasn't hanging around too long to take their photo!

Tis indeed the subway near the QMC! I live in Dunkirk, and have walked past it quite a few times on the way to the cinema (showcase, just down the road), and have always meant to come back and taken some photos, and only got round to it last night!

And I didnt have a tripod for any of them no. Either I found stuff to put the camera on, or leant on stuff to steady myself. They were all a quarter of a second exposures, except the subway, which was 1/110, and the water which was 5 seconds. Actually, the exif info is in the pictures, but seems to have gone missing in the uploading... odd.

So yeah, as an example, the watery one, the camera was sitting on the edge of the pool, and for 2 and 3 I was leaning on walls, with my elbows tucked right in. Probably helps that the S5500 isn't too heavy, so isnt too hard to hold still.

I was indeed alone. However, as long as you are in vagely streetlighted places, should be fine. I have never been hastled, no, had some odd looks, it has to be said, so just smile at people and carry on

. I admit that I am still somewhat wary, and tend not to stay in the same place for very long, so when stopping to take a photo, line it up in my mind before I get there, take the picture and carry on. I guess thats a little more difficult with a tripod, due to the setting up time etc. I've only ever taken tripody long exposures in well lit, busyish places.
