Canon Lens 100-300 f4.5-5.6 USM @ £229

Canon Lens EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM @ £389

Canon Lens 70-200 f4.0 L USM @ £478

Canon Lens 200 f2.8 L II USM @ £539

Cheers :)

From the looks of the lenses there your looking for a normal telephoto zoom.

Out of those lot the two I would consider are:

Canon Lens EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM @ £389

Canon Lens 70-200 f4.0 L USM @ £478

The newer version of the IS seems to be getting very good reviews saying its similarly optically to the L however the L certainly has better build quality and there are some interesting posts about the IS being sharper in landscape than portrait orientation, a truly weird phenomenon.

The 200 prime is the best (and most expensive) lens there, seeming as you have only zoom at the moment you may find the prime restrictive.

Your best bet is to go down to a shop and try out the ones your interested in, then you can make your mind up based on personal experience rather than other peoples opinions.

hey xolotl thanks for the comments. i have a prime (mk1 50) and i am happy to buy a prime telephoto. because i use my tripod all the time i think the 70-200 is my best bet over the 70-300 IS.

which leaves the 70-200L or the 200 prime as you say... can you give me more info on the 70-200 like what you use it for, best results etc. and if anyone has the 200 prime id love to see a review etc

not thinking of letting go of yours are you mate ;)

just been reading some reviews on fredmiranda about the 200 prime... im excited! i think thats the lens im most interested in but i do worry i'll lose the in-between (if i still had my 28-135 IS i would be complete :(

anyone wanna let me know if they have seen the 200L for under £500 ? would be very nice if so!

I know that some folks around here would recommend the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for a little more.

PersonaLLy I Like the results I get with the F4. It's built very well, it's light, and works well for the situations in which I use it (good light & oudoors)

If you want it for motorsports the sigma is probably better.

If you look here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_200_28/index.htm
and here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_70200_4/index.htm

You can see there's not really a difference between the sharpness of the prime and zoom at F5.6
