I've just fited a tuniq tower 120 (my god this things huge) but temps havent improved, i couldnt be bothered to spread the paste (AS5) did the old "whack a blob in the middle" instead so that could cause this, anyway:

Idle at the moment im getting: 53oC core1, 51oC core2
under load of prime95 on both cores i get: 67oC 67oC

would have probably hit 70oC if i had waited long enough, is this right? a bit worrying really as i never had a cpu hit 70 before

i have literally just turned the pc back on after fitting it, might try reapplying the AS5 later if it doesnt improve, am i right in assuming these temps are bad?

oh and cpu is an E6600, only overclocked slightly to 2.8ghz at the moment

Those temps are some what high (Depends also on the amount of TIM you applied). Recheck the mounting. It may be worth reapplying the AS using the the AS guide for Dual Cores. (Pic Courtesy of Big Wayne)

ah i didnt realise the size of the die on these cpus, first time ive seen a picture of one without its headspreader, cheers, will go and reappy now i think

have to admit although very big and awkward its a pretty simple HSF to attach (thank god)

Just looking at that diagram and thinking is that the reason the TRUE heatsink isn't flat, so it touches the middle of the heatspreader where the heat is generated? Obviously heat is tranfered thoughout, but the center is the most critical area...

Arghhh! you will start WW3

That doesnt make sense. Itd be much better to maximise the surface area by touching the entire IHS in order to dissipate heat.

If you were being sarcastic, please ignore.

I totally see you point, just trying to see if lapping is really worth a few degrees C decrease. Ive read about some people seeing no change whatsoever!

:D

Making me think it's probably the reason why some people who have lapped arn't seeing much of a temperature decrease.

Saw about 7c and more even temps on my rig, lapped CPU as well though ..

However I am not getting involved in the "its meant to be that way" / "Thermalright cant manufacture for buttons" argument :)

Simple answer is you buy one for performance and to get the best performance out of any Heatsink / CPU combination you need to Lap both to ensure the best fit... end of really in my eyes :)

well ive reseated this thing about 6 times in the space of an hour, i finally found the issue i was having, it was ever so slightly sitting on some capacitors next to the processor, so mounting at an angle, sorted that now, went into the bios and temps were lower

just come on here and yet again speedfan is reporting temps of 51oC/52oC idle, is this right? whats average for a very slightly overclocked E6600? this is doing my head in and my fingers are killing me from all the unscrewing!

EDit: it is quite warm in here right now though so whats an average temp in a fairly warm room?

EDIT: under load: 67oC both cores 100%
one core under load: 63 / 60 oC :/ not impressed so far, cant understand wtf im doing wrong here

um ive just been googling around and on a review someone mentioned something about needing a different retention bracket on gigabyte boards? whats this all about?
