Hi I need some help, hate to say it but i do.

Searched the internet and cant find anything.

Right, I have my main PC hard wired to the Netgear DG834 router.

My girlfriend brings her wireless laptop round, which connects fine to my router wirelessly and she can surf the internet fine...

BUT how do we do file sharing, I did it some years ago but forget and it is driving me insane,

Her laptop --> XP Home
My PC ---> XP Pro

both SP2

I have clicked on certain files on mine and her computer and choosen sharing. but nothing is happening. Perhaps I am missing somethign obvious.

Someone out there please help me, I hate being beat.

all I want is for me or her on each others computer is to wirelessly be able to view files on each others computers.

Thanks

Sorry my bad, i didnt think it could network through a router properly. In that case i have no idea.

Edit: Thinking about it, im sure you can only connect a network with xp home machines through a direct connection, so try it without the router.

Make sure things like File and printer sharing is enabled.. Also do the Tools->Folder options->View tab and untick the simple file sharing box.. Also, if you have a firewall on both machines, make sure they enabled for sharing as most firewalls hide the user on a network and stop sharing etc if on high.

Both false. XP Home will "network through a router properly", and will work fine with a router in place - for starters, the OS doesn't know there's a router there...

Are you trying to access the other machines with Network Places or some of those windows (which frequently take an age to update)?
Try Start -> Run -> \\[Machine's name or IP]

Yea, I forgot to add the end bit to mine.. Also I thought the only thing windows home cant do, is connect to a domain. I know that was an issue with media center. It was built for joining domains.

It doesn't have the advanced network sharing options that Pro does, but it can still exist as part of a network without any problems.

Yea, I know what you mean.. I just hope these tips help the OP :D

just got home from work, tried all this and stll nothing helps, i am using NETWORK PLACES and I can still not see either machine on each machine.

Surely it has to be easier than this. christ it has wirelessly connected to my netgear router and is on the net. all i want is for it to be able to access the shared folders on either computer.

Why so hard and difficult,,,,,

Sure it was eaisier last time i did it, just forget how,

My emphasis.

Home and XP Pro have different defaults for the workgroup name, change it to the same name on both PC's and all will start working :)

Make sure there's a tick in the box against File & Printer Sharing in the Firewall Exceptions.
For some reason I seem to be posting this almost daily at the moment....

tried all this nothing, ziltch, so so odd

So what happens when you try my last suggestion - an error message?
It's a struggle to believe nothing at all happens, and any message you do get might be helpful.

exactly what do i need to type on each computer and where etc ?

Pretend I am thick at this and dont know, so need a step by step guide please :(
