Someone teach a noob how to install a chat app to linux server?

Hey guys, been teaching myself websiting for a bit and im doing ok but im stuck with how to get a chat app (or any java based app) to run.

I dont know how to install it, what i need to install, and how to code it into a standard htm/css page.

Any suggestions for free chat appreciated
