Hi all

With the new F1 season starting really soon and the new Sky F1 HD channel taking off I'd love to get involved in the sport of F1.

However, I know nothing about the sport other than cars race around a track! I do know il be supporting Mercades as its my favorite car manufacturer!

Can someone tell me about F1 and how it works? Ie a F1 for dummies guide!?

Theres a little more to it, but thats basically it.

Cars need to make pit stops through the race to change tyres and refuel. I think they have to make at least 1 stop, but can make as many more as they want. Its not as straightforward as you think either, a car making 4 stops in a race can be faster than a car making just 1 stop. Fresh tyres after each stop will make it faster, and carrying less fuel between stops means it is lighter also (and therefore faster).

A race weekend will usually be in the format of:
Thursday - Free practice (drivers testing their car setup, etc)
Friday - Timed practice (more testing, with a chance to see how fast everybody else is)
Saturday - Qualifying (drivers are ranked by who can do the fastest lap)
Sunday - Race day (cars are lined up with the fastest qualifier at the front)

People drive round and an irate spaniard keeps crashing into them all pursuing his vendetta against a black man who is better than him.

In between that there is some really good racing especially since they have started evening out te cars, or at least trying too, im quite looking forward to this season.

They don't refuel in F1 anymore :)

I predict this season will see similar results to last. Vettel will take the winning spot a few races before end of season, like last season.

Hamilton will not make top 3 cause of his consistently (and too much so) aggressive driving.

Raikkonen will race very well, but will not make top 5.

^ All predictions :p

Incorrect, there is so much overtaking now, that it actually at some races became boring there was to much last year

Slight amendment to the above. Other than at Monaco where Friday is a party day and everything that usually happens on a Friday happens on the Thursday, the format is

2 Practice sessions (1.5 hours each) on Friday.
1 Practice session (1 hour) on Saturday followed by Qualifying (1 hour) a few hours later
The race on Sunday

There is no track action on a Thursday.

Picking a team to follow is a good idea. It keeps your interest focused. I would suggest you watch the build up to the Qualifying and Race programs too, as they cover off a lot of technical information for the casual viewer. The BBC shows were great for this, no idea what Sky's will be like yet.

How are you planning on watching it (BBC or Sky)?

each driver must use 2 sets of tyres if its a dry race, wet race they only need to use 1

To add a bit more detail to this.

Each driver must use both designated compounds of tyre available on a race weekend out of a pre-allocated allotment, when they use them in a race is up to team strategy. Tyre compounds are mark in a coloured livery along the lines of;

Red - Super-soft
Yellow - Soft
White - Medium
Silver - Hard
Green - Inter (wet/damp conditions)
Blue - Full Wet (persistent standing water)

Argh I had my hopes up that refueling was back!

At each race weekend there will be the choice of:

Wet tyres, Intermediate tyres, and 2 out of the 4 Dry tyres (Super Soft, Soft, Medium and Hard).

For Melborne for example there will be Medium and Soft.
