Someone using Instagram with my email

I thought I had an Instagram account so I tried to login with my email address of 20 years. I had to use the forgot password link to reset my password. After successfully logging in, I realised this is not my account but someone's in Turkey because there are tons of posts in Turkish. I want to use the account with my email so what should I do? I have already changed the password thinking it was my account but should I change the email too and reopen a new account with my email?

Keep the email address (as you've had it for 20 years) but wipe the Instagram blog and start over. If Instagram accepts 2FA, then turn that on to buff up account security. If the previous owner wants their account back, then tough, due to them using an email address that wasn't theirs. They can use the Wayback Machine / Internet Archive to retrieve their old posts if they're that inclined.

I had the exact same thing. Kept getting emails from Insta to my email address even though I closed my account years ago. Reset the password and was some Turkish kid's profile. Very odd.

Change the email address to another one and message them that email address?

The email isn't important but rather the handle.

This is the best opening paragraph of the book I will one day write.

What's a whole lot more likely is this unfortunate chap signed up with the wrong email and now you've hijacked his account. GG

Slightly related, but I've had a few emails recently saying "looks like you're struggling to log into your account", so someone's clearly trying to access my account. 2FA and a password change should make their life a bit more challenging!

I have had about 3 of those from Spotify in recent days as well. Wonder what the game is triggering password resets/login links to email you don't have access to?

I get email all the time to all sorts of services I don’t use, including things like Spotify because they don’t have verification.

I also get all sorts of things, messages about interviews, quotes for work, receipts for purchases, family photos because people get their email wrong.

Probably got the login details from a stolen database.

Happens all the time, on forums as well. Often the company doesnt even notice.

That reminds me, I really need to reach out to Denise in Philadelphia because I get all of her Home Depot receipts and one of them has her delivery time and date in.
