Ok, I recently upgraded to a 3770k from a 2500k. I have overclocked the 3770k to 4.5ghz and it seems fine with that but my memory is causing me issues!

Basically, I have two 2x 4gb kits. One is a Corsair vengeance 1600mhz 1.5v C9 kit and one is a G Skill Ripjaw 1600mhz C8 1.5v kit.

They will not play nice together at 1600mhz and 9,9,9,24 as I will get crashes and instability. My motherboard, when selecting 1600mhz for the ram multiplier, will auto select timings of 11,11,11,29 for that speed and then everything is stable.

I was happy with this however, my motherboard keeps resetting the memory speed whenever I reboot/start the computer again. It will either choose to have 1600mhz at 11,11,11,29 timings but more often it will reset things to 1333mhz and 9,9,9,24 timings. Everytime I turn my pc on it will start for a second or two....then power off, then start again and boot.

The motherboard is a p67a-gd53 and it seems like it is struggling with the settings for this 4 sticks and it isn't happy with me choosing 1600mhz speed for the RAM :(

I have read that 2 mis-matched kits can cause issues so I am wondering if it is better to just sell this lot and buy a 2x8gb 2133mhz kit (for stability and faster speeds)?

I would just stick with 8gb of ram but I need a 16gb minimum for music production stuff.

Just to add to this. I set all RAM settings back to auto and now it boots and restarts cleanly without any 'power off, then power on again, then boot' nonsense.

This boots with 1333mhz and 9,9,9,24 timings so the bios only seems happy with 1333mhz speed on the ram even though both kits are rated at 1600mhz

Is this simply because it is struggling with 4 sticks running at 1600mhz?

First thing would try would be up VDIMM voltage to 1.65v and QPI/VTT to 1.25, work them down if it boots and u stable.

Secondly is the board setting Cr to 1T or 2T. If 1T try manually setting 2T.

It is setting them at 2T

Would that damage anything ( i.e. CPU) putting voltages to 1.65 on ram and 1.25 on VVT? Is it normal that those values need bumping up when using 4 dimms?

vtt is too much, max safe is 1.2v,you shouldn't need much over stock 1.05v

1.65v dram is ok and 2t won't hurt anything

Oops phone auto corrected 1.2 to 1.25V.

As Wazza said 1.65v and 2T are both perfectly safe.

In fact I've spent a number of hours this week benching with 1.9v dram. No adverse affect on my cpu yet, although not all ram will be happy with that kind of voltage.

Ok so I ordered a 1.5v 2133 16gb kit ( 2x8gb) and I have just installed them. Computer cant even get into windows.... :(

This ram issue is seriously doing my head in. My motherboard manual says it supports 2133mhz but when setting the xmp profile the computer just cant boot, not even into the bios sometimes. I have tried with 1.15 vccio voltage is well and 1.55v(0.5v over the rated speed) and still get the same issue.

Is it motherboard? Can it simply not run memory at faster than 1333mhz! Or is my CPU's memory controller made out of cheese??

What about QPI/VTT voltage?

My IMC isn't great but will still does 2200mhz perfectly fine.

Have you got any CPU overclock at the moment? If so reset back to optimised defaults, load XMP and try that.

Yes my CPU is at 4.5ghz. It just doesn't seem to like running memory at more than 1333mhz : /. I don't have QPI/VVT voltage. I only have CPU I/O voltage (VCCIO mem controller I think) and System agent voltage.

it's different on my giga board then but system agent is memory controller

Try reverting back to stock cpu clocks for now. I can push 2400mhz on my ram with a minimal overclock but it doesn't go much past 2200mhz for benching at 4.9ghz.

I/O voltage I think Wil be qpi and If I remember correctly this is the uncore voltage.

Yes it is very confusing.

I get such mixed results when trying to find out whether the system agent is for he IMC or not : / . One guide says do not touch it at all, some say that VCCSA is in fact the IMC voltage...

In fact it seems there is one guide that says leave system agent voltage alone and many others seem to say that the system agent voltage IS for the IMC and the CPU I/O is also linked to this. I will try upping my System Agent voltage and see if I can boot properly at 2133.

Have you started at a lower mem speed first, try 1600mhz don't use xmp set the speed manually, then try 1800mhz and maybe 2000mhz,not sure how high you would run 16gb as its more tricky

Can use upto 1.2v vccio but around 1.10v should be enough

Havent tried a lower speed than the rated 2133hz yet, but i just cant get it to even Windows at 2133 at XMP settings, even with vccio and vccsa at 1.15 volts!

I tried setting the timings manually according to the xmp data it gives you (in memory z bit of the bios) but that made it even worse!

I havent tried 2133mhz and just auto timings ( with no xmp) so i guess i could try that next.

Getting a bit tired of it to be honest. How bas is running 1333mhz ram? :p
