Well to cut a long story short I passed my test in 2001 and have not driven since..

I'm now toying with the idea of getting some cheap wheels.

Out of curiosity I put my details down on the auto trader insurance quote thing on a 1.4 N Reg Pug 306 and the cheapest one was Zurich with £519.

So your in my situation and want something small about 306 size and cheap to insure and buy. What do you get in terms of reliability etc? :)

306's are terrible for reliability. many of my mates have had them (and 1.4 saxos and a 1.4 xsara which both use the same engine) and they have gone through loads of head gaskets gearboxes clutches etc etc. get an old astra :)

a 1.6/1.8 litre mk1 mondeo may be worth a look they are good cars and are cheap so I hear

1.4 nissan almera, insurance group 4 or 5 and can get them for £300 onwards.

maybe not the coolest car ever but certainly reliable, cheap and cheap to insure

Can get a 306 D Turbo for that money and it won't be much more (if at all) to insure than the 1.4 (wasn't for me at least...)

Bullet proof engine but interior bits start to rattle if not looked after :)

Experience with Almera

Is well worth going down the almera route, they seem very reliable. I have almost had mine a year now and not had to change a thing (minus a service and a new set of tyres),

Its been about 12k miles since its last service now, so it needs to be done, has not missed a beat though, just got to find a time I can be without my car, i'm extremely busy nowadays.

ps : Would love to do the service myself, but :( no time

I'd like to put the almera engine in the micra (as a learning project not a chavving project) as they are identical but bigger. brilliant engines

I loved my Almera, and if it wasn't for the fact that it was getting older and was starting to cost me money I decided it was time to get something newer, that and the fact that it was starting to rust :(

I had a 1.4 Si, quite a nippy little car, plenty big enough too.
