Ok, I may be flogging the ST :( And as I have the bike for pleasure driving/riding, I need something for bad weather commuting, looking to spend around £1200 on the car, insurance is already paid for.

So, any suggestions, I'm not too fussed whether it's a 'hot hatch' or a family saloon really, I'd like something with a bit of poke, maybe a 2.0 ltr, but something reliable would be nice; a tall order fro this money I expect.

Any suggestions are welcome :)

Thanks,
Scort.

£1200 is a mondeo, nothing else will be as good for the money really. I'd perhaps have a vauxhall omega V6, but they are a bit juicy.

I looked at the 2.0 Zetec Mondy, seems a good buy, just hate the interior - too used to the St's :(

Scort.

The Zetec's I have seen have a light beige trim and a plastic looking steering wheel. The ST, at least mine, has a dark blue trim and a nicer looking wheel :D

Beggars can’t be choosers I suppose though ;)

You are talking about a car which is going to cost the same as the tyres on a high end car, you cant be this picky :p

The money should see you in a 2.0 Ghia X model anyway, £1200 is actually a healthy budget for a mondeo mk2. These have "leather" everything, and are actually genuinely pretty nice.

Which ST have you got? If its a Mk2 Mondeo ST the interior is the same as that on a Zetec and inferior to that of a Ghia or Ghia X?

Thanks for the suggestion Jez; I’ll take a look at the Ghia X.

Fox, I have a mk 2 ST24, it has the half leather seats and the trim is dark blue with leather steering wheel and gear knob etc, but the Zetec’s I have seen on autotrader have cloth seats a plastic looking wheel and what looks like a light beige trim.

Like Jez said, I can’t be picky at this budget; I know that now, so it’s a moot point anyway.

Do you have any suggestions; you’re usually quite knowledgeable on motors from what I read?

Cheers,
Scort.

You must have an older ST24 - in late 98/early 99 the interiors were revised and the dark blue became 'Midnight Black' and looks much nicer. There were always a light and a dark interior option.

Nobody is recommending a Mondeo Zetec as in the trim level, people are recommending a Mondeo with a 2.0 Zetec engine. There is a difference. The trim level to get is Ghia X - if you get a light metallic one you will get a nicer interior colour. You will also get a leather steering wheel, leather interior, etc.

Go for the latest Ghia/X 2.0 manual you can find. There really isnt anything else as good for the money all round, this model is pick of the range and actually has a better interior and more kit than your ST24. Ignore the mileage, buy based on the condition and the "feel" of the previous owner.

Thats all the advice anyone can give really. As i say i'd personally have an Omega V6 which are available for similar money but are more substantial and better kitted cars, but they are a bit heavy on fuel compared with the Mondeo which is a lighter car and thus gets away with the smaller 4pot engine. The Omega also has the advantage of having a reliable automatic available though.

Mondeo is your best bet really, very reliable and readily available for the money :)

The fuel issue isn't really a problem; my ST has always been thirsty around town and on runs, so I may take a look at the Omega too, thanks.

Cheers for the info Fox, you old one was a Silver Ghia X wasn’t it?

for that money a mondeo 2.0ltr, get a decent mondy for that.

I picked up a 1.8ltr 98k for £690 with FSH, and its a great cheap run around, sit at 90 - 100 mph on the motorway comfortably, and you get a lot of car for you £'s. One draw back is they like to eat petrol! lol

Have the bike for playing on like yourself, so I dont need the car to be fantasticly quick.

Yeah, another Mondeo looks likely, not such a bad thing, it's been a fine car for me so far - looking forward to getting double figures on MPG around town too :)
