Kind of stumped....need a car around 17-20k max new or used, don't really care. I just want something practical but sporty.

Cars I've considered:
-Audi A5 Sportback 3.2 (4dr)
-VW CC 3.6 v6
-Merc CLS500 (not sure I can get a decent one in that price range without a billion miles on it)

Other considerations are a used FX37S or maybe a Toureg 3.6 though MPG isn't great on either

Basically, just need a car and really no idea what to get in that range. I know it's ridiculous but I want something fast (doesn't have to be a bullet, needs to be pratical, look nice and have excellent MPG, and finally the interior needs to feel and look great). Am I asking too much in this price bracket?

What is your definition of practical? 4 doors a must? Sporty and Toureg rarely feature in the same sentence.

What car do you have currently?

I'd prefer 4 doors as anything smaller wouldn't be too practical for me but obviously depends on the car I suppose, if it's a bizarre sedan sized vehicle with only 2 doors or something lol. Something practical for me would be a mid-sized sedan or 4x4.

I'd say the Touareg is pretty sporty tbh but then as I said I'm not looking for a bullet, just something that doesn't feel, I don't know, slow?

I don't have any car, hence the need for one :) Currently on a monthly Yaris rental and am doing about 20 miles a day.

i got a CLS55 a couple of weeks back - wonderful wonderful car, 476 bhp, well within your price range. Not your you can be much faster and comfortable for the price! ie sub 15k

Seems bizzare to me that you would have such a substantial budget but no real idea of what you want.

Is there not even a specific class if vehicle you are aiming for or?

£20k on pot luck just seems a little crazy.

If you can find a nice one of these and 22mpg doesn't concern you, then I am not sure there is a better sports saloon for 20K.

I might be wrong here but Housey wasn't your RS4 the least reliable car you ever owned with it being in the workshop every other month or something along those lines?

Yup but that needs context. I was hitting many of the now common issues first as I was putting high miles on my car. Many of the fixes Audi made to the car, engine management software and servicing programs came from some of my and a few others experiences. Audi had my car for several weeks not because it wasn't working, but because I was tired of emissions lights coming on and got tired of "it's the computer" so I asked them to find the real reason. I got a nice loan car and a free warranty and about 5 new engine management version in the 5-6 weeks they had it. It never stopped working once, but it had lots of niggles such as new rear exhaust box, new air filters and flaps and various other 'bits' some of which became recalls, so are most likel fixed now.

I did 108K miles in mine and sold it for 10p but I had also been through things that all owners got to see at some point. I would expect any car today to have the issues I had fixed if they have been looked after by Audi. The only really common issue is DRS and coking, but the latter can be helped by service and oil changes and I am still unsure if this was the real cause of the power issues.

Put all that to one side and there is no question as a day to day road car in all weather it is utterly peerless and in Avant form perfect. I know he asked for a saloon, but I had the saloon and would buy the Avant if I did it again because it's better.

Jaguar XF SV8? You'd get a great one for that budget

Might as well go for the 5.0 V8 Portfolio as seen a few under £20k. Newer, more efficient engine ( not much down on power to the 4.2 S/C but quite a bit more fuel efficient) and a slightly higher spec as well as being a newer car.
