Ideally id go for a 4 year old clio 172 for £5000-6000, but anything else out there for 6k or less.

Need to be....

- Good looking
- Good interior
- Realiable
- Insurance no higher than grp 15 as im only 21

Also looking at 106 gti but the interior (dashboard) is gash

Another thing i was looking at is a clio williams ph2 for roughly £2.5k but realiablity? need something for every day use aswell clocking up 50+ miles a day.

Old shape civic VTi?
306 gti 6

Any suggestions?

Civic VTi is a fine choice, but many I have looked at have high milage or have been boy raced and thrashed.

Proton satria GTi would be my choice. You should find one with around 25,000 - 30,000 miles on an 02 or 03 plate so it should drive and look like new. 1.8i 16v twin cam engine produces around 130 bhp. You also get lotus tuned suspension. Look quite nice as well, and chances are you will never see another one. Group 16 insurance... the satria sprint comes with the same body kit but only ahas a 1.6 engine.

edit: been looking for someting like this myself. I am also looking at the colt mirage. Has a 1.6 16v engine, produces 103 bhp but insurance group is 7. Comes with a nice sports kit as well.

Have you done any insurance quotes on a 172? I did a couple of quotes and found them ridiculously expensive for what they are. but then, i have 0 NCB

A light car with 172bhp! At the end of the day, its a performance car. You will pay high insurance because of it. You'll probably find that a fair few have been wrapped around a tree.

it's a tiny little french fwd hatchback with a moderate amount of power. it's hardly a rocket ship.

If I could afford to insure one, it's what I'd get for £6k. You should be able to find a face lift model for that without too much bother.

They look great, the interiors are nice and they're pretty damn fast.

Roughly 170bhp per tonne? Yes please.

After a passenger ride in one, they're a lot bloody quicker than I thought they were. :o

PS. Bug one, funny you should say that. The owner of the 172 I had a ride in rolled it two weeks later. I went down to have a look at the car afterwards and he was VERY lucky to walk away with just a damaged collar bone.

Tell ya what mate, they maybe tiny and french, but It more than competes with my ST3, up until 110mp there is absolutely noting between them, not bad considering they cost 13k new and mine is 20k.

Well, its a sub 7 seconds 0-60. No its not a ferrari, but its still a quick car, and you pay the insurance accordingly.

i'm not saying the 172 is a bad car in anyway, on the contrary i love them and have thought about buying one next year, i'm just not willing to pay so much to insure something that isn't 'that' quick. just a shame some people drive like ***** and manage to stack them

Well, all other cars that are comparably as quick are going to cost you the same amount. So you either pay for the speed, or you dont pay and have a slow car.

So far in this thread, there been lots of totally rubbish junk mentioned, and the Clio 172.

Get a Clio 172. Mitsubishi Colt? Doesn't even compare.

Insurance isn't anywhere near as bad as you make out. Admiral will actually quote an 18 year old with 0NCB and a recent claim on one, which is saying something. :o

You've got 0NCB so of course insurance is going to be mega expensive for you, it's a bloody quick car (as I said earlier, around 170bhp/tonne).

Go and find me some comparable cars of the same performance and price... then do some insurance quotes between them....

Expensive compared to what? Bear in mind it is one of the fastest and best hot hatches of the last decade.

Stilo Abarth 3 Door.

2.4 20v 170bhp should get a Manual for about £6k ins grp 14.

Why would you possibly want one of Fiat's biggest disasters of the last decade over arguable one of the finest hot hatches of the last decade?

I'm not being a fanboy, I actually hate Clios, but even a Clio hater like me has to concede - as far as hot hatches go, it doesnt really get better than a Clio Renaultsport.
