dont rule it out. the only reason the transfer speed is slow is because of the rotational speed fo the bluray readers. think about it - ps'3 are pretty much silent when reading. ill it takes is for them to improve the read accuracy and spindle speed and it could quite possibly happen.

The PS3 one perhaps, but I can buy a 5x Blu-Ray drive which would be faster than 12x DVD drive. This is all completely theoretical, as who would know what speed drive MS could/would install.

Whatever the case, you are right they would need to make sure it could sustain at least the data read rates that the Xbox DVD can do at the moment.

True, but one of the main reasons the PS3 is so expensive when compared to the 360 is because of that blu-ray drive. If microsoft wanted to chuck a fast blu-ray drive into the 360 i bet it would increase the cost of manufacture hugely. The 360 is very popular at present as it is the cheapest HD console and the hardware offers pretty much the same things as the PS3 (in terms of gaming) for less money. To include a expensive blu-ray drive and push up the cost would nullify the marketing strategy they seem to be sticking to - which is a cheap console with several upgrade options.

its something to do with the different read strategies involved, here's a review of the pioneer bdc-202 http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=20773&PageId=1

near the bottom, about 3/4 down, you'll see the speeds for single layer and dual layer BD discs. for dual layers, the reader actively alters the spindle speed, slowing at the middle and returning at either end, so that you get a constant x2 read speed from the drive across the entire surface of the disc. thats in contrast with single layer discs, that start off at 2x and finish at 5x. so the actual average read is 3.9x

Another question then, surely when a DVD is popped into a Blu-Ray drive it switches to the old school red laser to read the disc and DVD read speeds apply, so that if MS did put in a Blu-Ray drive, it would still be slow for Blu-Ray, but fast enough for DVD, which is what all games would continue to be written on?
 
Thats the thing, if there was a 360 with built in Blu-Ray, then yes, it would have to be done with a double laser system do that the drive characteristics would remain unchanged. Otherwise, even a slight change could make some games stutter or worse.

In fact, my divorced mother and father both bought a PS3 each for the specific reason to play blu rays. They don't play games. People always forget on this forum that we, are the hardcore, not the casual player.

Unlucky for me i don't live with them so i had to buy a PS3 of my own! Damn!

Yep. I use Wireless a and I stream HiDef content no problem.
 
If they sorted out the 360 with a new silent drive (like the PS3) then I would certainly be tempted to sell mine on and buy a new one!

Same here unfortunately. The 360 is such an awful DVD player I will use my PS3 for both Blu Ray & DVD.
It seems like such a waste though buying a games console and not playing games on it...

Im not that much of a gamer as it is, I don't experiment much and only tend to buy highly rated games or games Ive seen my mates playing so I wouldn't be buying anything like that for a PS3 anytime soon
