Getting a new machine soon but would like a laptop to keep me going. Something for general use and also playing the likes of bf3. Prob about a grand budget, would like to play future games if poss

What size? £1000 could buy you a dell m17x r3 from the outlet store if you're lucky enough to find one, but they are pretty hefty machines. The M14x would be under £1000 with the right discount codes and eurogamer discount.

The N55SF from asus seems to be a good priced option. GT555m graphics and blueray for around £750 and its a 15.6" machine. I believe the spec of these change a lot so make sure you compare before you buy. For example some come with 1600x900 displays and others have the 1920x1080 screens.

The latest MSIs (GT683, 780DXR) seem to be over £1000 but you may get the last generation ones (660 etc) for under £1000 and they'd still do everything you need.

I'm sure there are plenty of other options but that's what I'd be looking at for that budget.

You should be able to get a decent model for that budget friend. Agree With JimboJet that the MSIs are good laptops. Was close to buying an MSI FX600 last week.:)

I'm pretty much wanting to buy something now as I keep procrastinating. Willing to spend about a grand, would like 1080p if poss and a 17" screen.

I should also add that games are the main thing I'm bothered about. I would like something that can play games well for a while

edit - will go a bit over a grand if needed

looking at maybe getting the GT683 but £1400 is a lot of money.

I'm also possibly hitting the same issue as when I was looking at building a new machine - the next generation of cards are coming out and prices will likely go down when they do.

Think I'm now getting MSI GT780DXR-290

Argh!...Should I get insurance? Never really thought of that and I don't want to go and drop/spill something on £1500 worth of equipment.
