cpu-z says the cpu is running 2400mhz, but sp2004 says 2699? which readings should i trust?
i have set the bios to 300x8 so should clock at 2400
thanks for any help :)

Cpuz is correct, you'll notice windows itself saying 2.7GHz but only because it reads the highest multiplier capable x the set FSB, not the actual multiplier.

justintime that was exactly 2 mins after i posted! :D thanks a lot for the reply yeah i thought it was a bit wierd but i'll just keep beliving cpu-z
now back to trying to find my max fsb lol..

What board? If its a decent one you're prolly no where near the max FSB, especially if you got decent ram. That annoys me too, i know some of my boards can do far more FSB but i keep max multi just because i hate wrong speed reports :D

Got a few mate :D
Have a DS3 and DS4 too,

Try these BIOS settings,

PCI Express 105Mhz
FSB Voltage +0.1v
MCH +0.1v
DDR Voltage +0.1V

As for your cpu, try it at stock for starters, if you're still unstable try 1.35v

thanks justintime that helped quite a bit, windows does slow down quite a lot though when i run SP2004, does that mean i need more vcore voltage?
i'm unsure how far i can take this yet but a faster fsb means a faster interface with the memory doesn't it?
i'll probably start making the way to 3ghz with 375x8 or 430x7 but that means i require more vcore voltage also?
if anyone can show me how they've got theirs set up it would be great
thanks :)

Windows will slow down during orthos due to it using a lot of RAM and cpu time (depending on priority used) so nothing wrong there. Yes faster FSB and memory is what you want :) You may require more vcore and other voltages, however i'd watch those temps as the more volts = higher temps. Run orthos for 24hrs (some say 9 but i'm a believer in 24), if it fails you still have issues. Can you state your specs?
i.e cooling, RAM used, power supply etc..

yeah its slows down so much i can't even use the mouse :D but i'll try some upping of the vcore soon but heres me spec:

CPU: Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4ghz stock
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3
Memory: 2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-6400
PSU: Akasa 500W ATX2.2
Cooling: Asus Silent Knight

at the moment the cpu is running 40C under load with SP2007 at 363x7.
i suppose theres probably quite a lot further i can go, but i'm just unsure how to configure the voltages.
thanks :)

How're you measuring temps btw? Use coretemp or Intel TAT for more accurate measurments, the motherboard sensor etc.. is usually optimistic :D

slightly off topic here... i remember looking EVERYWHERE for the Asus Silent Knight... what is it like ? any good ?

i'm using speedfan to measure the temps but i'll try core temp and intel TAT.
sahjin its friggin awesome :D the led light in it is not as bright as i expected but it looks awesome none the less. my temps are more stable than they were on stock cooler and will not just shoot upwards, and are probably 10-15C or so less than i got on stock cooler.
