hi,

replaced a friends motherboard for them today as it had died. i re-built the system as i have done with many others before and when i started it all up the fan on the cpu span for about a second and stopped.

then i checked all the connections...the mobo led was still green when the power went back on (socket 478 board) and when i started it again i heard a faint "crack" and smelt burning.

now when i power up the fan spins normally.

reckon the cpu was dead before i re-installed it? or is it something i did wrong?

Re-Arrange some of the wires....

You might be surprised.....

Also check the board is shorting out and that there are no Molexes etc. touching any metal (i.e inside of case) ;)

Did you use a stock intel cooler? I have noticed these coolers dont half put a lot of stress on the motherboard, so much as to force the socket area down, flip the board over and it looks like its bulging. I had this problem with an abit ai7 and got paranoid about it.

I cant say if this could be the cause on this board your working on, it could just be something so simple its head slappingly obvious when you fix it.

Have you got another cpu and cooler to try?
