I have run into something that i fear is major...

let me first give some info about my PC

I have an i5 2500 on a H61MH motherboard, 8GB Kingston RAM, R9 290, 850w Antec PSU.

I was playing COD Ghosts and got to the end of the 1st level and paused the game to go get a drink when i came back my screen was black and my pc had shutdown (or so i thought). I had overclocked the GPU a small amount and it was running 25% on power, 12.5% GPU and 4% Mem. I have taken the card out and tried to put my other 560ti in but the PC does not turn on, not even the fan lights etc. The GPU felt hot when i took it out but not excessively hot in my opinion, i felt the PSU and that felt a lot hotter. I don't have a spare PSU to test so can anyone make an educated guess as to what has happened? I will add that when running benchmarks earlier the card never exceeded 75 degrees and was running the same settings as when i was playing the game but completely fine didn't shutdown or anything. My initial instinct said the GPU was a goner but after i swapped out GPU i got no response from the PC still so that leads me to my next guess .. PSU?

can anyone offer some insight? is it the PSU?

CPU fan spins ?

Done a cmos clear on the mb? Does seemlike dead psu or a bad crash

Been reading about those cards suffering black screen issue

Is there a power light on the motherboard?

will it even attempt to post?

Do you smell any odd smell in your case?

If the GPU was touchable (in temperature), doubt it was the cause but whether its fine is up to the PSU.

There is no life anywhere, the cpu fans, case fans and the LED's do not spin or light up at all. I swapped kettle plugs with one that knew worked in case it was the fuse but that did nothing either. I don't about CMOS and am unsure how to clear it. I haven't had any black screen issues with the card this is the first issue since putting it in recently. The case did smell a little bit .. near the PSU

Pull the 24pin PSU plug out and short the green+black cable (this replicates the power button being pressed)

See if the fan on the PSU spins? if any fans or mechanical, HDD are attached to molex/SATA cables they should spin too.

excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "short" do you mean me to pull the green and black wires out of the 24 pin and touch them together?

sorry i haven't done much of this before

Use something (needle nose pliers?) to join the two pins together with the 24pin connector pulled out and you are looking at the ends.

ok i understand what you mean now but i cannot find a pair of pliers that are small enough to fit in the ends .. is there something else i could use that is safe or is there an alternative way? is it safe to pull the pins out the back of the 24pin and touch them like that ?or will that break it and blow me up?

Ok i did that and nothing happened. Does that mean the PSU is almost certainly dead? What are the odds of the GPU being ok?

How old is your Antec and which model is it?
Some of them carry a 5yr warranty so you may not have pay for a new one.

I'm also not sure I'd be comfortable putting that 'budget' PSU in a machine with an R290.

For the love of god, invest in a decent PSU (Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, Be Quiet etc.) for peace of mind.

To be fair the one that just died was a bloody Antec ....

I am on a fairly tight budget as i don't get paid til the end of the month so i can only spare about 80 quid at the moment. With regard to Dual rail vs single rail etc i was under the impression that more rails was good is that not the case then? Within my budget there is a bequiet pure power 730w, an In win GreenMe 750w, a Cooler Master GX 750w and a Corsair gamer edition 700w .. are any of those of a suitable standard and capability?

How old is your Antec PSU? and the model as I would RMA if its less then 3 years old, I shall point my good friend Ace Modder to this thread (Antec Rep) :)

It only had a years warranty when i bought it and that was a couple years ago so it was probably needing replacing anyway. I got it from ebay so any warranty is definitely run out now.
