Turned my PC on this morning after a long while of not using it, did some updates and what not and just browsing t'internet at the moment.

It's being a bit of a pain in the rear end as the CPU seems to be going mad without anything really going on. The performance bit of task manager shows this:

But my processes are just this:

And there's no delay between taking the screenshots, barely a second or two.

What is eating my CPU? I have AVG Free 2013 installed and up to date, btw.

My bet is the DNS Client Service is chewing up cpu power.

Have you got a massive hosts file or have you let Spybot Search & Destroy immunize your system?

I find the resource monitor can offer some more useful insights as well. How does task manager quantify CPU Usage? Number of threads or some other metric?

Pure CPU usage as a whole (all cores combined). So if a program shows as using 30%, it is using 30% of the whole CPU. You can add more columns to the processes tab, such as thread count and CPU time etc, but I find the default adequate for the purpose. The resource monitor is handy if you need to go deeper into it.
