I have a Canon 600d with the kit 18-55 lens and I find even when it's zoomed all the way out it's still not wide angle enough most of the time.

I used to have a Sony NEX-5 with the 16mm prime and it was perfect.

Is there a similar prime lens for the canon?

The only primes that wide are fisheye lenses. I'm going to have my Sigma 10-20mm on the MM very soon if you're interested ;)

Why are primes more expensive though? Surely it's just like a zoom lens but with no zoom?

It's the glass that makes them more expensive. Primes tend to be faster therefore they use more glass.
There are of course exceptions as always, for instance the canon 50mm f1.8 is a fast prime but is quite cheap, particularly the mark II version which uses cheaper plastic mounts.
