Hi all

Basically, updated to ios5 when it came out and it wiped my apps but been re-downloading them as and when I want them again. I had VLC on my phone before and went looking for it but it has been removed from the appstore for some reason  Is there another, preferably free, app that can different video types as I hate having to convert all my videos.

I know I can get the app again if I jailbreak but thought would check if there is another way before that.

Yeah VLC was removed by Apple from the App Store, so you won't be able to redownload.

The only way to use it is if you Jailbreak and get it from Cydia.

I think you can redownload old apps, even if removed from store via the purchased tab

Edit - just looked for vlc in my history and I can't find it so might be wrong.

Yeah can re-download all your old apps even if they've been pulled from the store.

*He says as he's playing Tris*

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure when apps get deleted from the App Store they are deleted from Apples servers - What reason would they have to keep them up?

I would post a photo up of VLC and Tris available off my iCloud account but I'm at work, you could probably source the VLC.app so you can install it that way, if thats legal

Hmm just looked up the icloud possibility however this is all I found on it's removal: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/08/vlc-app-removed-from-app-store/

So I don't know whether Applidums removed it or Apple removed it for them, from reading about the icloud possibility it seems it doesn't work for apps removed from apples end, only those taken down by the devs. Would be interesting to know if it works as, if the link is correct, stupid reason to get it removed.

Either way, I know where to get the jailbreak and where to get the app again so should be easy enough. Just seeing if there was an easier way without jailbreak.

I still have VLC on my iPhone, and it stayed from my 3GS to my 4S so as long as you have it in your Mobile Applications folder it should get installed (and will bypass the DRM check as your account has already 'bought' the free app)

If not then you need to get your hands on VLC.ipa

I don't think I'm allowed to send you mine.

I don't think you can just add .ipa files to your phone unless its jailbroken (When you jailbreak you install AppSync which allows this). So I think it's the only option unfortunately :(

I use CineXplayer on my iPhone, think it cost £1.49 about 6 months ago. Then just dropped my avi files into the Document sharing section in iTunes (when you go to iPhone -> Apps and click on the app and scroll down). Played them without a problem though obviously not free - just another option for you though

Correct, to install ipa files on you iPhone you need to be jailbroken, you can add ipa's from your PC with iFunBox or any SSH client

vlc is great, but I've found you get some serious gradient banding issues.

Which is why i use cineXplayer for everything but .mkv files. For mkv i use VLC and suffer the banding.
