Hi guys!

I have a huge dilemma, I need to find something pretty soon, a tablet or laptop, doesn't matter. The requirements are:

  • Small, it's going in a backpack, only used for films, picture viewing and browsing.
  • Light.
  • Long battery life, often weeks will pass with random use.
  • 2 USB ports, one for a camera and one for a external HDD.
  • Easy use for transferring pictures, uploading pictures to the web etc.

As for OS, any that can supply me the above, most importantly is transferring pictures from my camera to my external HDD. Both are USB. The OS doesn't have to be snazzy with a ton of features, so even something like Ubuntu would work.

Don't really have a price restriction, but obviously the cheaper the better. It will be going around SE Asia and Oz with me. So chance of some damp conditions, maybe a bit of drizzle, will be thrown around a few times so a little sturdy.

Thanks!

I recommend any of the asus seashell eee pc range, 10.1" screen and perfect for fitting in a backpack! I traveled with one, great for watching movies when you're on the move or having a bit of downtime, and somewhere to store and upload photos from.

Mine isn't this exact model, but for the most part has the same spec;

- Battery life, incredible (I get 4 hours of constant movie playback from one full charge, and about 7-10 hours charge when browsing etc)
- 3 USB ports (on mine atleast!)
- 10.1" screen, tiny little thing
- Must weigh about a kilo or something!

I'd recommend 2gb RAM, I actually upgraded to 2gb from 1gb, and the difference it made was surprisingly large! That coupled with an SSD I've put in there makes it a mean little device for playing movies/backing up photos etc

Awesome suggestion! And a SSD will be a must, I made the upgrade on my PC and can't look back haha.

I will be storing stuff on the 1TB storage drive as well so no need for a big SSD.

I might upgrade to 4GB stick (have ton here at work, hehe). Ubuntu or Windows XP?

How did the build fair up to the life of a backpacker then? And any bad points?

Well, I've found that netbooks in this regard will typically have Win7 starter, which I believe is limited to 2GB ram, but happy to be corrected on that.

It was fine, make sure you've got a sleeve for it, and you're good to go!

No bad points at all, my only gripe was that with only 1GB ram it wasnt the best performer, but spending 7 quid on the rainforest for the 2GB stick resolved that.

Upgrading to an SSD was a bit of a nightmare as getting into the thing was a bit difficult, it is very very well built/secure!

I'd be happy to sell you mine if I didn't use it each evening to watch a couple of episodes of curb/arrested development each evening :p

Having said that, am looking for a tablet which I can literally hook-up an external drive to and watch movies on, so it may appear on the MM soon enough!

Haha, will keep an eye open for it then :)

I will more than likely stick Ubuntu onto it, as Ubuntu handles lower specced machines much better.

Again, thanks for the recombination :) The fact you took it travelling and still use it at night now is a good point to me!
