something wrong with my dual core?

ecoding some videos using nero vision, and i set it to 'below normal' in the options (priority).

If i set the affinity in task manager to cpu 1 only, the cpu stays at 40% or so. But if i set the affinity to cpu 0 only, the cpu usage shoots up past 80%.

Setting affinity to both sees the usage shoot up in the 90% range.

Any ideas about this? I tried leaving it set to cpu 1, but whacked it up to 'high priority' in nerovision's options but windows slowed to a crawl, even though only 50% usage was shown! I don't get it.

my rig is prime stable last i checked...do i need some sort of patch? Incidentally, playing games whilst using 'below normal' in nerovision was smooth as silk, so i'm sure the cpu isn't broken as such...but something isn't right.

Why are you setting affinity in the first place? It's only to be used by developers or in extreme cases where there is a compatibility issue with software.

I expect if you leave the affinity alone everything will be fine. Also if Nero Vision is running the encode process as single threaded then you are never going to see performance above 50% anyway.

When you've got dual core there's no need to set things as low priority. You can have Nero encoding and playing a game and Windows will automatically ensure both processes end up on different cores.

ah right, so is it normal that it should be on 100% usage when i'm only using nerovision?

i think the think might be that i just started using the latest version of nero vision and maybe it's dual threaded now?

If Nero Vision is multi threaded then yes it should be running at a theoretical 100%. In practice it will be a little less than that because there is always other processes using CPU time.

The fact that you say CPU usage goes well past 50% when you allow the affinity to use both CPUs suggests that Nero Vision is multi threaded.

In short, just leave it all well alone. Windows handles the job automatically far better than any human can.
