Something Wrong With This Extreme Overclock?

I was previously running at 625/1600/1024 settings in Rivatuner 2.05 for my 8800GTX. I then read that boosting the Shader gives the biggest performance increase overall and if overclocking you should start with that. So I reset the clocks to defaults and then clocked the Shader. But I've gone gradually all the way up to the maximum of 2025Mhz. Surely this can't be safe?! I thought such an overclock would be impossible on this card, especially with only the stock fan.

I should note that on my previous overclock settings, pushing the shader to 1625 would cause the system to lockup under stress testing. But at default values it runs fine at 2025...

Someone explain please.

does it translate into more performance?

try running some benchmarks before and after to see if its actually running at the higher speed.

You will probably find its not actually running at the higher clock

I tried overclocking the Core next and noticed that even 1Mhz over the default setting would cause the system to freeze, when in conjunction with the extreme Shader overclock. This makes me think that the Shader overclock does not work until the core is clocked also. I know very little about these kind of things though, and would appreciate someone who does helping.

As mentioned, benchmark it using 3Dmark 05 or 06 and actually see changing only the shader actually works.

(use 2.05)

I did use 3dMark 06 and it actually scored around 2000 less. But then I loaded up my old settings and it was only 500 higher than that...

Before I was scoring over 12500, now I'm getting 11000~.

I started OCing again after seeing my games performance suddenly decrease. It is seemingly out of the blue but a few system changes have taken place. I installed the following:

* nVidia Motherboard drivers (previously was running without them)
* Drivers and software for Nokia 6300
* Warcraft 40K: Dawn of War plus all official patches
* An IE update

I think the motherboard drivers have buggered up my performance. Is it better to go without them? I know you are normally supposed to install these first in a new build, but when I got the 8800GTX I accidentally got rid of them along with the old drivers for my 7600GT.
