Hey all, just bought a system consisting of the following:

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 940 Black Edition
GPU - Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 Golden Sample 1GB GDDR5
PSU -Tagan PipeRock TG700-BZ 700w
MOBO - Asus M4N78 Pro GeForce 8300 (Socket AM2+/AM3)
HDD - Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB SATA-II
RAM - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz
Optical Drive - Sony Optiarc AD-7201S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter

Anyhow.. Switched it on and all fans etc were running but no output on the monitor, tested 2 monitors (both of which work fine) on all VGA and DVI ports and no look... Whats broken? lol.. Im assuming the CPU since everything else running off the MOBO seems to be working fine.. :(
 
Double check that you've connected all the components and leads and that they're all connected properly - most common fault with a new build and this type of problem (and very easy to overlook - we all do it)

The other thing to consider is shorting...

I'm afraid i can't expand any further as the kids need me... (I will look in later)

8 or 4 pin connected for cpu power.
Try a CMOS reset and one stick of ram, then try the other just in case you have a faulty stick.
 
All right ill try single RAM next, ive checked all connections btw though, don't see anything ive missed and ive checked more than once... I swapped ports with the RAM but havent tried with just one stick. Will keep trying :)
 
As this was your first post - is this your first build too? (Welcome to the forums, BTW.)

If it is your first build have you remembered to use the risers? (the brass screws below)

If it's not your first build, obviously, ignore the above - but do check that the mobo is fitted securely.

Sorry all, found out what was up - i didnt connect the 4 pin CPU power cable - thanks RJC.

Now i have another problem tho, my Phenom II x4 940 is @3ghz non overclocked with stock cooler, running at 1.09v... atm its running 61*c, half an hour ago it was 57*c... The MOBO is at 29*c steady, so i don't think its the air flow (especially as i tested it without the side panel)... This is whilst installing updates, but its only using 20% CPU capacity. Thats not normal temperature is it?
 
didnt ou get a better heatsnk? its prety esential to an overclock. if so put it on. i no buy one. also the side pannel increases air flow. put it on
 
the side panel is on :) as for another heatsink, i wasn't intending to overclock for a while, hence the stock heatsink. Nevertheless 61*c seems on the high side for (almost) idle. At idle it rests around 58*c - whys it that high :|
 
i'm not familiar with stock AMD HSF - do they have the push pin method of connecting to the motherboard?

If they do are you absolutely sure that all four engaged properly with the mobo? (If one was only partially making contact it would explain the temps)

If you're really concerned about your temps the only option is to check the HS connection and then reseat it if neccessary (i would, even, if it looked ok). If you're careful you wouldn't have to reapply any more paste - it's not best practice - but it's not been attached to the cpu for very long so you should be ok.

Hey, its kind of a push bracket method with only two brackets which clip onto the base. Im thinking i should reseat but ill get some more thermal material first... any recommendations? Arctic Silver 5 keeps popping up. May move this thread to cooling... Lol
 
Instead of spending £5 on some AS i would look at spending a little more and getting a semi-decent third party cooler. The benefits would be far greater - and they usually have thermal paste pre-applied.
 
In theory it would void your warranty - but they would have no way of knowing what cooler you used unless you told them. (And, unless you crushed the core fitting it on, there is no harm in using a third party cooler - in fact if you're not clocking it's beneficial to the chip.)

Your temps are warm - where are you reading the temps: BIOS, HWM software?

If you are reading them from the BIOS - you could try flashing the BIOS to the latest version as this sometimes resolves sensor readings if there are known issues. Read the BIOS upgrade notes for your mobo and see if it's listed as a known fault.

If you're not reading them from the BIOS head there now and see if they read the same.

What are your temps under load?

Thats what Core Temp reckons my CPU heat is just after start up, which is supposedly reliable although i do need to update the BIOS yes. With it that high, even if its a false number, i don't wanna risk it. Gonna reseat the cpu heatsink/fan when ive got some paste and hopefully see some improvements. If not ill update the BIOS and see if that levels the numbers off abit...

That's really odd, I would've thought it should be 200x15, don't Phenom IIs use a 200 link? Mine certainly does, and I was under the impression it was the same CPU with a core disabled?

At 1v that's ridiculously high (as an aside, that should give you a nice overclock). Did you reseat yet?
