Somethingtodo's PSU roundup

They look pretty, but push 'em hard and they go out of spec.

I had a Q-Tec, but when I added a couple more SCSI drives and a DVD player it actually did go out of spec and become unreliable. It did look pretty though, and worked in my main rig for a few months fine.

As I say in my Tagan post - you pay for top quality, but a cheap one may get ya through if you are don't push it too hard.

Quick answer? Weight. The heavier it is, the better the quality. The Tagan weighs about a ton.

Also you are looking for enough Amps on each output to run the kind of kit you have in your machine. This generally means a higher figure.

If you run some kinda monitoring software on your PC like MBM5, watch the max and min voltages. You don't want to see anything dropping below 10%. Ideally you want it all to stay above the required voltages 3.3v, 5v, 12v, etc.

When looking at PSUs what exactly is it that you look for in terms of quality? :o  :o

the amount of amps on each rail and the amount it fluctuates.:)

turbo deluxe 510

Its around the £150 mark, very expensive but it looks like you get your moneys worth.

Currently having probs with my system that I think are psu related so I'm in the market for a new one,the specs for this one are probably the best i've seen, not sure if i'm willing to fork out that much cash though.

Currently have an antec true power 550w,which I think is faulty, you may be able to confirm this for me.

When starting the system from cold, everything kicks in,fans, hard drives,cd-roms etc.But the system fails to post,it just sits there. If I then cut power to the system via psu switch, flick back on and restart the system, everything is o.k,system posts and boots into windows without any problems.

Also if I press the reset button while psu switch is in the off position, once i've switched back on and started the system it will post and boot into windows o.k.

Have also experienced the occasional random crash whilst gaming.

what do you reckon backslang,do I need that turbo deluxe 510?

Well first of all - Have you tried another PSU capable of powering it?
Have you ran memtest and prime 95 (could explain crashing in gaming?)
Sounds like a mobo problem to me, liek the cold boot issues on DFI's (although i appreciate its not a DFI)

Try an RMA direct from Antec or from the retailer you purchased it from.

You do have a thristy rig (very nice rig btw:)) But Im pretty sure that the antec 550w should power it, If you didnt want to spend ~£150 on a PSU buy a tagan 480w as they have a bit more beef on the 12v rail, or an enermax (460w+)

let me know how you get on mate:)

Swapped out PSU today for a unit thats been powering my other system,so I know its a sound unit, its a reasonably beefy true blue 480 watt.

Anyway still got the problem despite the swap,so it must be something else.Motherboard is prime candidate but will check memory, graphics card etc by swapping out individually.

Cheers.

Antec Neopower looks good but pricey

+5v 38A
+3.3v 30A
+12V1 18A
+12V2 15A

Again dual power rails for the 12V, and a new design of being able to plug in only the power connectors you want to use rather than the normal tangle.

Has anybody tried the SilenX 600 psu ?

Considering getting one to replace my Tagan - getting some screen corruption thanks to the new 6800 ultra - think it might be power related.

doubt its because of power, probably borked ram on the card.

Well I don't understand how it can work fine for a day or so then the next time I reboot it displays screen corruption and I have to reboot it a couple of times, then if I'm lucky its fine again.

I do have 4xSATA HDD, 7x Case Fans, a Zalman CPU Fan, 2x CD-Rom drives, 2x fan controllers, CPU, Soundcard etc.

I just want to elimanate the PSU as an issue. So I've ordered the Silenx 600w PSU - see if that improves ths situation.

If not then the card goes back asap.

Cheers.
