Sometimes do teeth just... break?

This isn't a medical thread, I'm just looking to see if these things happen.

Last night I was eating, something not hard, and I heard this crunch. It turns out that part of my tooth had come off. Very weird since it isn't hurting and it doesn't look rotten. So does this just happen? Do teeth just break sometimes?

How do you tell if a tooth is rotten on the inside?! This is why people should go to the dentist at least once a year. I know so many people who havent been for years.

I said it doesn't look rotten, but it still could be. The last time I went to the dentist was 14 months ago. I've booked an appt for this afternoon.
