Hi there,

Ever since the swap from my Thermaltake Soprano to the Antec Sonata II, i've noticed a rise in CPU temperatures. I'm hitting around 63*c loaded with my Athlon 64 3700+ at 2.8Ghz 1.36V on an Akasa Evo 120 cooler.

While some say 63*c isn't that awful, it does tend to occasionally spike as high as 70*c in games causing the auto shutdown I set in bios.

I have some questions.

1. This ones more relevant for Sonata users. What have you done to improve airflow? I'm using the stock rear 120mm fan and recently fitted an Akasa Amber 120mm fan inside the drivecage right at the front of the pc by the vent and dust filter. Anything more I can do that doesn't involve silly amounts of modding?

2. Due to the layout of my DFI LanParty nF4 Ultra-D, the only way my Evo 120 fits is with the heatpipes facing downwards and the fan blowing hot air downwards to the bottom of the case. Is this a significant contributing factor? If so, would it be more beneficial for me to find a HSF that can be rotated such that I can have it's fan blowing air sideways to the back of the case / or even at least upwards towards the exhaust fan?

wasn't sure whether to stick this in overclocking and cooling or case central but this is really specific to the sonata II so I'm posting here.

Thanks in advance.

Well the cooler on the CPU is not performing well enough quite simply, you may not have got the termal paste right or the cooler may just be pants. :p

I would try spending a little on getting a more appropriate cooler, grab a Thermaltake Big Typhoon and lap the thing for great temperatures.

Moved the thread as I am confident it is not a case issue.

Hmmm I did do my research when I bought the cooler a year ish ago, and was pretty sure of it being a good cooler. Certainly might be worth trying a new cooler then.

Was thinking along the lines of a Scythe Ninja Plus, TT Big Typhoon or the Tuniq. Not entirely sure if it will make that much difference over my evo though

Could you not just turn the EVO120's fan around so that it is sucking air through the heatsink, and blowing up towards the top of the case? Something to try before you spend any money...
