Sonata II question and Monitor spray paint query (Operation Black Samsung)

Does anyone know how quiet the Antec SonataII case is? I've got one ordered and planned to stick some Hitachi/Maxtor SATA HDD in it, and some DVD drives, along with an AMD64 with retail cooler and a decent graphics card. Anyone with experience with this case know what its like for silence, and audio dampening?

Also, I have a 959NF Samsung 19" CRT monitor, but its *ugh* beige...brilliant monitor but the colour sucks. I have some old Citadel colour spray paints (back from when I used to collect Warhammer about 6 years back) and was wondering, if I covered the glass screen, and the vents etc, would it be okay to spray the monitor black, so it would match the rest of my new system which I'm building, and then put some clear spray varnish on the top to protect it, or would I perhaps not even need to cover the vents if I made sure I didnt spray directly into them?

The monitor is about 1/2 yrs old. I cant afford to get another monitor, and this monitor doesnt come in black anyway afaik.
To protect the vents, I was thinking of taping cling film over them, but as it seems to be suggested I will try spraying the case off the monitor, and then putting the internals back inside the case.

How would you suggest handling a monitor outside of the case? Touch internals with plastic gloves on, set them down away from the case, spray the case, and varnish it, give it 20 mins to dry, and then put internals back in the case?

Yeah, right now I'm trying to get the case off the monitor, its an awkward sod, hencer I've posted in the Monitor forum if anyone knows how to do it. Forgot to take a picture of the base before spraying though... DOH! Have sonme pics opf the monitor though so will show monitor before picture (so you can see the colour before) then show you the resprayed base so you can see the new colour :)

If you're not confident about stripping the casing off the monitor and you can't afford a new one, then DON'T DO IT!

Take it down to a TV repair shop and have them take the case off. Then take the case back and have it refitted once it's been sprayed.

Also, speaking from personal experience, most home modding looks pretty poor and ruins it's second hand value. I generally find that it's better to sell unwanted kit and buy something else rather than attempt a bodge. You may be better with your hands than me, but I still wouldn't ever recommend modding anything you can't afford to replace.

You can probably imagine how bad a beige monitor would go with black and blue mouse, black keyboard, black and silver speakers and black case though...

Wanted to get a monitor in black at the time, however the 959 wasnt available in any but beige. Luckily for me, the paints I have are designed for use on plastics, being modelling spray paints, and the surface of the base and casing are slightly textured too, so the pain seems to be bonding nicely :)

Am just finishing off actual spraying of the bass before spray varnishing it, apart from being slighly stiff on the moveable joints, the base is looking fine, as its a nice matt black spray with a slight shine to it, and the varnish is matt too so it should end up a nice black with a slight sheen :)

I can show you the base very soon, still examining the main part of the monitor, to work out the best way to get off the case, bloody nice monitor, bloody awkward design lol... just waiting for the varnish on the base to dry, then you'll see the colour I'm coming up with :)

That is not looking half bad mate!

Its turned out a lot better than what I was expecting from the citadel paints, as they are not the best if I think back to my warhammer days!

Thanks. The monitor had a rough texture, all I'm doing is spraying on a coat, with recoats where it looks like its missed it slightly) of Chaos Black spray, and then spraying a layer of 'purity seal' (spray varnish).

Gives a nice, matt black look with a nice sheen as I said :)

Could this be the beginning of a new phase of people of people using cheapy citadel spray paints to get nice gloss black computer parts? ;) :D

Total cost for entire project once finished.
One can of Chaos Black Citadel Spray
One can of Purity Seal Citadel Spray
Some sellotape/ducktape to protect glass screen visor
A bit of time

= £15 or less :)

A nice, cheap mod/paint job done using materials found in the home ^^

The blue bit is made of the same material as the case, so when sprayed it should be fine :)

Would only cost £7.50 (think its that for the black) but I decided to varnish for protection.

If I get really bored my go respray my old pc case too, cos thats a creamy beige colour, and I'm not unhappy with the way this black look is coming out :)

Yeh the varnishing is not a bad idea, gives a longer lasting finnish :)

Tbh, if I make sure I spray the paint so its even, it actually looks damn good, although dust and stuff like that cant always be helped. Its got a tiny blob on one side where some paint pooled, but tbh its hardly noticable, and the paint job looks awesome :)

Cant wait to get the main monitor apart and get it all done :)

Have also discovered that paint cracks slightly if dried to quickly, when I reprayed a little bit on the base, and sped dryed it, but all shall be fine, as its underneath, barely noticeable, has been resprayed, and means I know not to speed dry the main casing (like 30secs) lol just warm dry the main casing over like an hour and all shall be fine :) was fine earlier...just had to have missed a little bit and try to touch it up didnt I? lol

I have sprayed the vents from all angles, apart from the odd position I missed, its just the flash on the cam reflecting :)

Also, it does have a slight camo effect on the front, but its no way near as visible as the picture, again, thats the flash making things looks worse.
