On the same day that Winamp 5.3 and iTunes 7.0.1 have been released it's worth not forgetting that Songbird 0.2 "Test Flight" (i.e. Beta) also just got released over at http://www.songbirdnest.com/

If you've not heard of it, it's an open source media library program (similar to iTunes etc) based on the Mozilla engine and created by ex-members of the Winamp team. Don't expect it to be as fully featured as iTunes just yet (it is only a beta for version 0.2 afterall) but it does show a lot of promise. Check it out!

Does look interesting tho, nice site too, shame its still an early build. Those screencasts dont work yet.

For me tho I prefer my media player like winamp, modular and small so it only takes up the space I need it to.

Im a neat freak with organising my music so never really need the library feature as I know where everything is etc etc, also as I listen to long dj sets its not worth it.

Still, I have been wanting something that you can use 'rules' with, or dynamic search lists.

Is it possible to cross categorise media files? eg I have a video I want to clasify as 'comedy' and 'adventure' or a music track that is 'dance' as well as 'chillout' etc etc.

Will deffo keep an eye on this, but at the mo it doesnt appear to do too much more that winamp or the others.

EDIT:
anyone else think the site reminds them of New Zealand Story? :p

Looks like a black iTunes from here. :p

As i stated it is only version 0.2 so you can't expect too much but it has the potential to be so much more.

When Firefox first launched no one would have thought it could take on IE or indeed provide far more functionality.

The thing about Songbird is it builds upon the whole Firefox extension concept. Whilst the official site is yet to launch it's extensions page people are already writing for it, such as the Minimise To System Tray extension.

I definitely think it's something to keep an eye on, as like Firefox is the web browser you can do virtually anything with thanks to extensions (Gmailspace, Adblock, Customise Google anyone?) Songbird is destined to become the media library equivalent.

same view as me mate :)

i'll give it a try, as long as it doesn't add any services or constantly running programs, like the shambles of itunes

winamp + mozilla = hopefully an awesome product

Thats the most anyone has ever quoted me. \o/

I'll try it out sometime, see how it compares etc.

Shame their forums are like... Dead. :p

I'm using this now all the time on Ubuntu, it seems to be a really nice player. I certainly prefer it to Amarok, Xmms, BMP et al.

I like it so much, I've put it into my signature :)
