I got my iPhone at the start of last summer and as a result I obviously installed iTunes and proceeded to transfer songs and albums to my iPhone over the next fews weeks.

Back then I was running Windows Vista but in Autumn last year I moved to Windows 7 and deleted my Windows Vista partition shortly after. I carefully made sure I backed up everything I needed such as important documents and photos but perhaps naively I didn't backup any of my music as it was on my iPhone and I assumed I could easily retrieve it. This is where I appear to be wrong.

I've just got round to installing iTunes again (I never bothered when I originally switched to Win 7) and having "authenticated" (is that the right word?) my iPhone again it began to sunc with the PC. The music library shows all the music on my iPhone but if I try to listen to it 90% of it says it can't find the song/media and prompts me to locate it.

Some of my music was purchased from iTunes last year so that stuff is fine but a whole heap of music was purchased from Amazon on that day where they had loads of albums at the wrong price.

Is there an easy way to retrieve the music from my iPhone or do I have to download all my music from Amazon again?

Edit - Just found out Amazon won't let you download music more than once. Great!

The problem there was that you didn't have your music in one place, in iTunes preferences make sure you tick the 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' and 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' boxes. This will make sure all of your music is in the iTunes folder.

Before you backed up you should have consolidated your library. That would have moved it all into the iTunes folder for you so all you would've needed to backup was that folder.

Anyway, to get your music back of you iPhone, use something like this. (I think that's free, there is another, but I can't remember the name)
