Sonic CD, just played for the first time

I missed out on this at the time. I was a huge fan of 1-3/knuckles on the MD but never owned a sega cd. Just tried this on steam

It just feels like some sort of dodgy rom hack? Really cluttered and the levels just seem overly full I dunno what I'm trying to say lol

Also it seems like it was made around sonic 1 or 2? I assumed it would have been after knuckles but all the art etc feels more dated than that

Is it worth playing? Just feels a bit weird, first impressions ofc
 
I actually think it's one of the worst entries in the genesis era. Sonic is best when he's hooning through levels which is absolutely not the 'aim' for Sonic CD.

I was really disappointed.

S&K is the best, but really I mean Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
 
Yeah it is terrible, was it on the Mega Drive or Saturn?

I'm tempted to get a few Sonic games for nostalgia sake, also I swapped my Dreamcast for an N64 before Sonic Adventure 2 came out, so I never got round to playing it
 
Sonic 3 and knuckles is my favourite too, cd was on the mega cd add on

Yea the sense of speed is gone, you get running then something just blocks progression for no reason!

To the above, sonic adventure 1 and 2 I loved.. at the time. Recently gone back and they haven't aged too well in terms of camera controls and so on. I did love them though, sort of like marmite I think

However it marked a down hill spiral from which he has yet to return lol

I hope Mania brings back the MD feel
 
It was made at the same time as sonic 2. The two games went in different directions and their ideas didn't really gel in sonic CD.

Thought it felt more like 2, so that makes sense

I think I will leave it be, I just swore folks held it in high regards but maybe I misheard lol

Best sega cd game maybe, can't imagine there were loads of hits on it but best platform game?

These are the sort of comments that make me feel I should have played it
 
I had a Mega CD at the time and even then I thought this was an awful game compared to S&K.

I was lucky (or stupid?) enough to buy a 32X addon for my Mega Drive back in the day, it had Knuckles Chaotix. In my mind, that is the best Sonic game by quite some distance, it's just a shame that probably not many people got to play it.
 
I remember coming home from school to a Mega CD with Sonic CD, man...what a game! Easily one of the best Sonic games imo
 
I'm on the fence with Sonic CD. As a massive fan of the franchise, it was one of the classic Sonic games I did not play at the time so I can't view it through the lens of nostalgia.

Never got round to beating it.

And as above, Chaotix was indeed superb
 
I like Sonic CD, the original ideas of Sonic 2 with time travel placed into a separate game. Same with the cancelled Sonic 4 (Not the 2010 game) and the idea puts into Knuckles Chaotix, another great game.

The days when Sega didn't have a clue in which direction they was going but still made good games :)

I think CD is the very bottom of the genesis era games. It's a total doddle to whizz through and it's not very fun to find all the time machine stuff 'needle in a haystack style'.

Edit - such a good post I made it twice :o
 
What makes it different is that you have 2 characters from the Chaotix crew linked together. You can use the link between their rings to pull off some crazy jumps and stunts. Levels are really good too, I can't remember there being a single rubbish level.

Damn, I really want to get this out now and play it again.

I don't have a 32x unfortunatly but do have a retro pi setup..
 
I adore sonic 2,3 and knuckles. I could never get on with Sonic CD and I like all the weird spinoff stuff like sonic spinball

Have high hopes for Sonic Mania!
 
I felt the exact same when I played through Sonic CD. I am a massive fan of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, yet some complain it is the worst of the bunch :confused:.

The romhack Sonic 3 Complete is worth trying for all of those S3&K fans out there.
