Sonic CD & Sonic 4: Ep1 on Steam

Sonic 4 ep 1 is an utter load of rubbish, the animation of sonic is slow and looks cheap, half the time sonic doesn't do what you tell him to do. That sonic modified version released free sometime back was much better
 
Saw these earlier my computer froze when the steam message was loading to be displayed. Wondered what it was for a while.
 
So which of the Sonic games would be considered must haves? I've not played any before but would like to give em a go.

Best to start with the first game then carry in if I like it, or best to skip to ones just released?

Oh, and I'd be using a keyboard - bad idea?

IMHO Sonic 3 is the best of the old Sonics. I love all of them though, as you might notice ;)

Sonic CD is damn good too, just started Generations, which is really good too.

Oh yeah, 360 pad all the way
