What are peoples opinions on the sonicwall range of firewalls?

I've heard you have to pay a yearly fee, but i'm not sure what this is for.

They are pretty good. The licensing is a real put off for me. You are limited on network notes (unless you buy the unlimited license) and are also limited on VPN connections etc.

What are you looking to do? A zyxel may come in cheaper depending on what you are after.

I have a SonicWall TZ150 Wireless here at home and oodles of other SW stuff in the office. TZ150 is limited to 10 nodes, TZ180 can be 10, 25 or unlimited nodes (with a license key upgrade to move between sizes).

You can pay a yearly fee for UTM services (gateway AV etc) and support if you wish (you don't have to).

On a TZ150, I would expect...

10 nodes (given you can't take a 150 any bigger - it's pitched at the very small end of the market)
2 site-to-site VPN tunnels (ie firewall to firewall)

If you want client VPN (ie PC with software) you need to get a Global VPN Client license which are ~£25 each. Max of 5 concurrent clients (ie you could install the client on 10 PCs but only the first 5 to try will connect) supported on 10 node IIRC.

Entitlement to firmware upgrades comes via a SW Dynamic Support contract which is renewed yearly.

FWIW, they work well with the Draytek 100 or 110 ADSL modems (set the WAN port on the SonicWall to PPPoE and enter your ADSL username/password). There's no config to do on the Vigor.

well if i was to get one it'll be with a cable connection, so basically it would function as a hardware firewall without the license?

If it's second hand, yes.

SonicWall licenses work through MySonicWall.com. I would expect the previous owner to have registered it to their account and if they don't transfer it to yours, you'll need to e-mail a picture of the unit's serial number to SonicWall. They will then transfer the unit to your MySonicWall account.

Hence if the previous owner had a Global VPN Client License on it, you should get that when it's transfered to your account.

No problem. If you do get one, they are pretty easy to work with but post up if you need help. I've setup more than I care to remember.

Depends which generation appliance.

Yes, a SonicOS Standard on a TZ150 would look roughly the same as on a TZ170 or a Pro 3060, though the 3060 will have some extra features. They have different firmware images for upgrade purposes though as the hardware inside can be different.

An older SOHO3 or Pro 200 uses the previous firmware which is usually refered to as 5.x or 6.x. When SonicOS arrived, it went back to 1.0. The 3060 I'm logged on to at the moment is on SonicOS Enhanced 4.0.0.2-51e.
