Sonos upgrade

Hi all :) I have two Play 1 speakers in stereo mode in the living room, they sound pretty good to me and I love the ease of controlling live radio, podcasts and Spotify from a tablet/phone.

I fancy an upgrade but I'm not sure which way to do it, I'd appreciate some advice.

Sonos Play 5 speakers seem to retail for £350 each so I'll set my budget at £700 - I could stretch that a bit for an alternative.

The alternatives seem to be a Sonos Connect amp (£399) and a pair of speakers or a Sonos Connect (£279) a seprate amp and a pair of speakers.

Any suggestions ?

Best quality will come from the Connect + (decent) Hi-Fi amp + speakers. By "decent" I don't suggest going mad. You just want something that's capable of driving typical budget speakers to a good volume whilst maintaining a good grip of bass control and treble sweetness.

2nd choice is the Connect Amp + speakers. The final result does depend on the speakers though. Get something with high efficiency: 90-92dB @ 8 Ohm impedance

As good as Play5's are, by necessity they make quite a few compromises to achieve the all-in-one solution.

If you're making the set up static by using a connect amp and speakers etc. Rather than the mobility of a pair of play 5's. Have you considered a Play bar?

I have a playbar without the SONOS Sub but the Bass is sufficient for my modest 3 bed semi. If you go down the play bar route you could the tie in the two play 1s as rear speakers for surround sound. If not watching films the play ones can be moved about the house.

If it just for music, the yes I'd go for the connect amp and speakers, then use the ones for kitchen/bedroom.
