Sons birthday upgrade advice....

I'm looking for a an upgrade for my son's birthday in July. He's currently got a 3060Ti, which will be sold to help fund the upgrade. I'm a bit stuck on what to go for... we're looking at up to £500 maximum budget i think.

So far I've considered a 4070 super, or a 5070 (though the latter may be out of range financially) but I'm not really sure what other options there are around the £400-500 price point that would provide a suitable upgrade option from a 3060ti? I've not owned an AMD card in over 10 years at this point so I've lost all track of what fits there.

Any advice welcomed!

I just upgraded my 3060ti with a 16gb 5060ti a very simple upgrade, same power connector and the new card draws slightly less power. Got a pretty decent upgrade in game performance too. And it's less than £400.

The other better cards need more power and I think a different connector, and can be a lot bigger as well, which could be a factor if like me you're dealing with a small case.

Get nothing less than a 16gb card, if you can. in fact i'd pay that little bit extra for one for more future proofing and that most new games now need this.

Cheapest 5060ti 16gb on pc is £399, cheapest 5070 is £539

That's a price increase of 134% for a 120% performance boost. Not the best bang for your buck

The cheapest 5070 is £509 on OCUK, followed by £515.

Regardless, I'd push for a RX9070, as others have mentioned Nvidia's drivers are in a poor state at the moment and it's a far healthier performance jump when coming from a 3060ti.

The performance difference is larger than you're stating also.

That said, it does depend to an extent on the rest of the PC. What are the exact specifications of your sons PC OP, including the PSU and desired gaming resolution?

Not sure off top of my head what motherboard he has.
Case is certainly big enough to house a large gpu
New PSU is planned at the same time, he only has 500 or 550w at the mo.
Games at 1440p

CPU, motherboard and ram will probably be a next birthday upgrade i imagine.

Had a chat with him earlier, he's dead set on wanting Nvidia because it's what he's always known. I've not had an AMD gpu since the R9 280 back in the heady days of mining crypto with simple GPUs, but I'm sorely tempted. He's on board with the idea of having my 4070Ti and me getting a 9070 (...which may become a 9070XT ¬_¬) if i can't find a second hand 5070, which i've said to him is quite unlikely given how new they are.

The 9070's are spot on tbh and you can find the odd one at a decent price, a 4070ti would be a healthy jump in performance for him too.

If I was him I'd be happier with that than spending half a grand on a new 5070 or £400 on a 5060ti, the 5000 series has been shockingly disappointing imo.

Keep in mind the 9070 is about the same speed as a 4070Ti, though you will get more vram, but lose RT performance. I'm not sure i'd pick up a 5070, again similar performance to what you have, but still same 12gb, does have new magic tech though (still disappointed it can't make me a cuppa). I suppose it depends how cheap it is, but really 12gb shouldn't be on anything except entry level IMO. If you're considering a second hand 5070, why not look for a second hand 9070?
