I have a Sony 32Gb memory stick that I bought maybe 4 months ago which I use regularly with my home PC Windows, work PC Ubuntu and Macbook. Recently I have noticed that some folders featuring images or tex files are becoming corrupted.

For example some .tex files will appear garbled and some png/eps images are no longer accessible.

When I remove the USB stick I always use the remove hardware safely options. What could be causing the corruption?

I ran the windows drive repair function once and one entire folder ended up being lost (fortunately I have a backup).

It's quite annoying though as I compile tex documents a lot and having to recreate files or images as they will no longer compile correctly is a time waster.

I'd say cross compatibility between platforms is at fault, but i dont know what would be the best solution, the lowest common denominator is fat32 but its an awful Filesystem, if your using it for the stick it could be the root of the troubles. NTFS is covered across all 3 platforms now since Paragon brought out an NTFS driver for mac's that allows them to write files to drives using that filesystem.

ExFat might be another option but im not familiar with how its been adopted yet, what im trying to get at is the most likely fault is not all 3 OS'es handling the files in the same way, causing corruption.

I see :(

The drive is FAT32 atm. I suppose I can live with it. Thanks for the information.

Was it from ebay? There used to be a lot of VAIO branded USB drives that were supposed to be 8GB and appeared to be the right capacity but were much less, once they started to fill up they started corrupting and all sorts.

No it was purchased by my work through our regular electronics reseller.
