Sorry for another thread but this ones narrowed down from my previous where I thought I wanted a DSLR but a mirrorless will suit my needs much better.

I was set on the A5000 - it seems like a cracking camera for £250 however the curveball is that it literally seems to be sold out everywhere! Rainforest has a blizzare dispatch window of 1-3 months. There's one Currys which has it in stock that is 20 miles away + that is £300.

I leave to go travelling in 3 weeks so unless something comes into stock within the next week or two I'm stumped.

I'm kind of forced to now be considering a A6000 which I can find for £500 in stock at Currys.

What would you guys do in my situation. £300 for the A5000 or is the A6000 worth the extra 200.

I take mainly landscape photos and photos of artchiecture. I'm coming from taking photos with my iPhone 6. I'll be sticking with the kit lens that comes with either camera for the time being.

Please advise!

I have an a6000. Was a bit sceptical having come from a chunky DSLR but after a few sessions I'm won over by it.

Have no experience of the a5000 but can only say I'm really happy with the 6.

I'm planning on buying an a6000 soon. After a lot of research, it seems the best bang for buck.

I have previously had a canon 60d followed by a canon 6d. But i have got rid of all my dslr gear as i very rarely used it due to it's size and effort lugging it about. The a6000 seems to be the perfect trade off between size and image quality/features.

Buy an A5000 2nd hand, there are A grade ones for sale in those exchange shops on the high street for £200. You can also get A5100s from there for under £300. Pocket the money you save and then buy an A6000 at a later date if you so desire or buy extra lenses for the A5000.

I own both the 5000 and the 6000 and there is not so much in it, 24 vs 20 mpixels a better screen and a view finder. Both are killer cameras anyway and I'm sure you will be more than happy with either.

I looked at the Sony A6000 before buying a Panasonic GX8. The thing that put me off the Sony was the limited lens range but looks like cracking value for money with the kit lens.

Personally if I had the choice I'd pay the extra for the EVF, really enjoy having an EVF over just a screen, much better in bright light.

A6000 all the way , very versatile camera. Although I don't think I use the camera to its full potential to be honest. I mostly use it in full auto mode :D I'm a camera newbie.

I got the 16-50mm kit , wished it had a bit more zoom , so it might be worth getting the 200mm kit to start and see where you go from there.

Have you considered import? I purchased my A6000 from Digitalrev they have both the A6000 and A5100 in stock and only take a couple of days to arrive.

I'm going through the process of upgrading my evf-less mirrorless at the moment.
Not sure how the screen of the a5000 compares to my samsung nx300 but unless it's a grey day then trying to compose an image on the screen becomes a frustrating guessing game

I was sad to say goodbye to my NX300 but the lack of EVF was annoying.

I went to m43 with the Panasonic GX8 and the EVF is amazing, the buffer is MUCH better (30+ vs 5), the lens selection is huge in comparison (especially telephoto and pro options), autofocus is more reliable despite no PDAF, the camera is much quicker in operation and the screen is better too.

On the negative side is that despite the smaller sensor the GX8 is chunkier and better built, and even the latest m43 sensor isn't as good as the NX300, let alone the NX500.

It's a hard camera to upgrade from - ideally I'd like to have stayed with an APSC system but Sony had a limited lens range and the latest Fuji bodies were too expensive.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I popped into Currys to have a physical look at them both. The A6000 is noticeably chunkier and bigger (relatively speaking here) than the A5000. I think for my personal usage, the A5000 fits the the bill, I don't require an EVF as I've never used one (coming from a phone) the increase in megapixel will probably be wasted as I share the majority of my photos on Instagram and the better stability would also be wasted as I take my photographs of stationary objects. I think I could put the 200 I save towards a lens or just on plane tickets! I also think I may have sourced an A5000 at John Lewis.

There's no doubt the A6000 is a superior camera but for my needs if I can source an A5000 it'd be money well saved.

There was a Panasonic GF7 in stock at 310. It looked good but haven't done much research on it. Less MP at 16.

JRJ - I had a look on digitalrev and it states they order them in. Going by conversations I've had with online sites it seems that the Sony factory which produces the sensors for all cameras was hit by the earthquake in April and has been closed and has just over the last few weeks reopened. So for that reason the only places where you'd be successful in getting hold of a camera is at places who have physical stock of it right now, any website which needs to order in probably won't get them or will give you a lead time for of 1 month plus.

Jessops website seems to have a5000s for delivery - not sure how reliable they are.

Yep Minstadave you're right, struggling with upgrade direction. I'm thinking about gx8 too, possibly with the 12-35mm but yeah the drop in sensor and physical size is bugging me and keeping me from jumping on the buy button.

I might just be my eyes but it feels like there's more noise in similar photos from my GX8 compared with the NX300. I do wonder whether going Fuji might have been better.

Thanks it seems supplies back in as Amazon has stock too!

Also FYI re the GX8 Panasonic are offering 50 quid cash back. Just saw it on John Lewis website.

Before committing to the Fuji X system, I did too look at the Sony A5000 but was put off my the lens line up and cost.

If you have not already made your mind up, I would highly recommend looking at the Fuji X system instead and especially how the lens compare.

For the cost of the A5000 you can get either a secondhand X-T10 or E-X2.
