Sony A99 full frame SLT previewed

It's an interesting bit of kit. Shame they went EVF only, the tech is getting better but I much prefer optical for most uses. I only really like EVF for low light. I'm not an SLT fan either, I'd rather have the 0.4 stop of light. Although if I was into video I'd probably be interested in this.

I'd like to hear how Jeremy Clarkson would describe it if he reviewed camera's.

I know it's shallow but I'd be much more interested in Sony and some of their rather appealing technologies (like in camera VR) if they went old school with their camera design instead of making ugly ducking camera's.

If they made something like below I'd be seriously interested. I wouldn't feel like some dork walking around with a big ugly DSLR.

I think it's actually the lens that makes it look funny in that pic on page 1. On the succeeding pages (where is has a larger lens) it doesn't look that bad.

To be honest I thought this A99 is an improvement on previous models! As long as it handles ok...

Oh good god please don't say that's real...

That body reminds me of a really ugly version of the Leica R8 (speaking of which damn that thing was beautiful in it's own absolute tanky way) in it's height. It's just too tall as a body for a grip to not look massive, and that grip design, if real, is awful.

As for the tech, nothing unexpected really, except low FPS I guess.

Odd decision to keep the gripped area the same height as the body without grip. I like the extra room a grip gives so my fat chubby fingers can all fit!

@ Manc
Yes!!! (although they are not quite as ugly as this offering from Sony).

:D
I'll let you have that one.

But seriously I think Sony have missed a trick here. It needed to offer a ridiculous FPS and with a good buffer while utilizing the dual phase detect AF but without it, its just another FF body with some new tech in it.

However I'd still be all over it if I could justify the cost as I'm now an EVF convert and not having to stick my face in the filth every time I want a low angle shot is brilliant. :)

I don't see this converting any of Canikon crowd though which is unfortunate.

Looks looks looks......

My A77 looks very much the same with its grip on and the extra height it provides is awesome.

If you have big hands (like me.!) its a blessing and although it might not be as aesthetically pleasing as some others, the operation, function and ergonomics of it is the best I've ever used.

It's looks because everything else about it is bog standard and nobody expects it to outperform any other flagships in pretty much any regard other than video. Looks were the only thing we weren't fairly sure about before the announcement. As for the grip, and the height argument, this actually doesn't really give you any extra size to have to hold on to, just a much bigger piece of kit on your bag, that is awkward to use in portrait as your hand is about a foot over from the viewfinder. If it was just about being 'big', then they could have put the portrait shutter at the top of the grip, or the right of the camera in landscape. Instead they've got a weird, pointless indent that means both landscape and portrait grips are just as small as any other camera, but with a needless amount of camera to go with that.

They didn't 'choose' to go EVF. There is no viable way of doing an optical viewfinder with SLT tech.

From everything I'm told by Sony reps and the like they are fully aware they are never going to take on Canon and Nikon at their own game, hence their decision to go SLT. They want to become the '3rd player', that is all.

Exactly, so dump the SLT and go optical/EVF hybrid. Nothing SLT brings interests me unfortunately.
