Looking at getting my first dslr. I think I've narrowed it down to a second hand sony alpha a350 with a 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 DT zoom lens for £200
Or a canon 1000d with 18 - 55 mm lens for £150 delivered

Just after advise on which is better for a newbie. Also would the 18-70 lens be better?

They'll both be ok and produce decent images but they seem expensive to me. As a Sony shooter I used to own an A350 and sold mine for a little over £200 4 years ago.

If you are in the £200 bracket have a look at a used Nikon D3100 or Canon equivelant or even have a look into the used mirrorless market such as a Sony NEX or Panasonic G body, you'll easily get a decent setup for around £200 that will offer better images and more modern features than either of the bodies you are looking at.

If you need somewhere to have a look at some start with MPB Photographic, their prices are good and service excellent.

Perhaps a Canon 500D and either a Canon 18-55mm IS or Nikon 18-55mm VR if you decide on a Nikon body would be a decent starter lens.

Go for a second hand lumix g5 with 14-42mm kit lens, same image quality as an dslr but smaller and easier to use with its wysifyg evf. There only £248 brand new.
I shoot sony too but if i was changing i would go m/43.

That nikon d3100 looks very good, so many decisions
is there any other sites to look for a better deal?

What's a defuser and is it worth £5 extra on the price of the lens
Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR is the lens I'm looking at

Get the 18-55 first then learn how to use the camera, see what you like to photograph and in what lighting conditions, that will give you an idea of that lenses you need.
Personally a 35mm 1.8 is never off my camera it give a human eye type of fov and can do the nice blurry backgrounds that the 18-55 stuggles with.

Not really sure what I'd take photos of the most I do a variety at the mo, car pics, landscapes and family

In that case a d3100 with 18-55 and a 35mm 1.8 would get my vote. 18-55 for landscapes and general walk around lens and the 35mm 1.8 for the car and family portraits.

I'll only get one lens at the mo, my budget is creating up bit by bit. Started around £150, think it will be about £250 with the bag and card

Thanks, sorry about all the questions.

One last one, I've just seen a d3200 for £250 delivered, how much a better is it than the d3100

Got the camera, 18-55mm lens, bag and card for £ 250 delivered. Now just got to wait for it to arrive.
Is there aa good book/site to teach me how to use it well
