Looking at getting a 4k 49 inch TV (I want 55, but think it will be too big to fit).

Basically, i've been looking at the Sony as I can get a bit of a discount (about 20% off any online prices - so this will cost me about £540 as opposed to the £700)

Basically, am i being blinded by the discount and is there an equivalent at the same price (£700ish) I should look at instead, regardless of discount?

Thanks

What kind of viewing experience are you hoping for with it?

Reason I ask... I've had quite a number of colleagues / friends who have purchased 4K TVs and ended up disappointed, their expectation was quite high over their old 1080p set. I've had a few actually feel ripped off, as really 1080p to 4K doesn't offer much benefit.

If you're replacing a broken TV or just don't have one and need one, then its an average TV and good price.... It'll definitely do the job.

However, if you're moving from a Full HD set which already does a good job but have an expectation of a 4K TV to deliver you a much better viewing experience.. I'd consider either waiting until 4K sets with specs that meet Ultra HD Premium specification hit your budget, or push your budget to £800 for the likes of the 49" KS7000.

Thanks sprite,

Long story short, we've got an old 32 inch Samsung HD set - which is fine - we actually don't watch loads of TV.

However, we've got our first baby due in June.

I've got my heart set on a good TV before the baby/being a parent takes all the money.

My priority for viewing is Moto GP and other Motorsport. Films as well.

I know nothing is future proof, but it seemed wise to go 4K? I can got to £800 if needs be and any additional advice is greatly appreciated.

Either way, i'd want to go and actually "see" the screen before purchase, as I believe that some look better to others based on your personal preference.

Ah welcome to the club :). I've got two boys, 7 year old and 6 month old.

This is a difficult one then, particular in consideration of what you watch (Motorsport mostly). I'll try and summarise a bit some things to consider.

The move from 1080p to 4K is pretty minimal, especially in consideration of screen size and viewing distances. In the vast majority cases will struggle to differentiate between the two. I have a Samsung 55” KS7000 and sit around 11 feet from it, I notice “some” detail changes but it’s nothing to shout about. However, since you're buying a TV anyway before the baby comes you may aswell get a 4K TV. So it's really comes down to whether you want a set with more longevity.

The main advantage of moving to a 4K TV now is Wide Colour Gamut (Which the Sony you posted has) but more importantly HDR, you’ll see allot of TVs advertise “HDR” but they don’t actually demonstrate it well (if at all) as they lack the brightness / ratio required to do so. It really does give you some “wow” moments dependant on the content being played.

HDR content is pretty sparse and I can’t see live sport getting it for quite a while, especially as SkyQ doesn’t “Yet” support HDR (even though it has the hardware to support it). HDR is however starting to play increasing role with Movies and TV, with manufacturers pushing it hard this year at CES. You’ve got a few options of 4K HDR content on Amazon, Netflix and of course, Ultra HD Blurays. I do think the next 1-2 years is going to see a considerable amount of 4K HDR content coming out, any new series from Netflix or Amazon is going to have it. You'll also going to see quite a clear division between sets that are Ultra HD Premium Certified and are not.

Then again, all of the above is a bit of a moot point if what you predominately watch is Motorsport, if you’re not into your Movies or TV then the lack of HDR isn’t likely to bother you.

It’s a balance though.. If actually you’re buying a TV to keep you going for the next 3-4 years and in that time will likely watch TV and Movies on top of you sport, I’d say the extra investment in a set which is certified Ultra HD Premium is a wise move.

As you say, you're going to demo. I'd suggest popping to Richersounds or similar and ask them to show you the Sony but then also get them to demonstrate a Samsung KS7000 with some 4K HDR content, you'll see quite a visible difference in the two and can then balance whether you figure it's worth it.

Sprite - Thanks for taking the time to give me the low-down.

Yeah - we're pretty excited, although we've already been informed that life is going to change somewhat.

I imagine that films/TV might take a little more priority when Dr Jones (The wife) is off on maternity, so if you feel the content will be there to support it, I think it might be worth the jump to set which can really make this content "pop".

Our lounge is reasonably small so we'll only be around 8 feet from the screen. Now i've measured up, I think 55 will be overkill for the room size anyway. Thoughts?

The first 6-12 months are pretty knackering, I can't wait till we're through it with our second haha. You'll enjoy it though.

Yeah I think it's wise to get a decent HDR TV like a KS7000, you won't feel the need to upgrade then for quite a while. I promise you that watching The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime in 4K HDR is breathtaking on my KS7000, especially the 2 part road trip. Was stunning.

Screen size can be quite a personal thing, at 11-12ft away for me 55" is as large as I'd go, I think anything above that would be too big. With you at 8ft I'd probably say 49" is the same, just the right size. See what you think when you demo one.

Just got back from the Demo at Richer sounds.

I can get a 8088 for £508..... but after seeing the KS7000, i'm going to stump up the extra £350 notes I think.
The difference is overwhelming, even at standard 1080.
KS7000 has a much brighter, more fluid screen with much better depth perception.

The Sony looked juddery and dull in comparison.

Sprite - how is the sound? The guy couldn't demonstrate the TV alone so couldn't gauge the necessity of a soundbar from the word go. Will I need one?

Yeah it's quite remarkable how 4K HDR looks on a proper Ultra HD Premium set isn't it :)

Really difficult for me to judge mate, I haven't used in built TV sound for years and I run a KEF 3005SE 5.1 with Denon AV Receiver. So any TV would sound pretty poor to my ears.

From what I've seen others say though, it's a pretty good performer on the sound front when compared to other TVs.

Then again, you're treating yourself... May aswell get a soundbar while you're at it hehe.

Just pulled the trigger - JL price-matched £788.99 so i'm pretty pleased with that.

Soundbar will have to wait until payday though!

Congrats mate. Glad you went to demo one so you knew what I was talking about, managed to convince a couple of people on here to make the same call. You've got a cracking TV there that will last you several years, also for a very good price.
